South Ribble Borough Council

Disabled Facilities Grant (South Ribble)

The statutory Disabled Facilities Grant in South Ribble: up to £30,000, including all charges and fees, to adapt a home so a disabled person can live there safely and independently, such as a level-access shower, ramps, stairlifts, hoists or wider doors. Owners, tenants and other occupiers can apply, including for a disabled person they live with or a disabled child, after a Lancashire County Council occupational therapist refers them. It is means tested, and the council's policy allows a discretionary top-up of up to £10,000 where the full £30,000 has been used.

Who can apply

  • Owners, tenants and other occupiers in the Borough of South Ribble, applying for themselves, a disabled person who lives with them, or a disabled child
  • A person must be referred by an occupational therapist: adults through Lancashire County Council Adult Social Care, children aged 19 or below through Lancashire County Council's Inclusion Service
  • The council checks eligibility, assesses feasibility and carries out a financial assessment to decide any contribution
  • Where works cost £5,000 or more, a 10-year local land charge is placed on the property and up to £10,000 is repayable if it changes ownership

What it funds

  • Make it easier to use your toilet, bath or shower, for example installing a shower rather than a bath
  • Make it easier to get in and out of your home by installing ramps
  • Make it easier to get around the home and improve access to your bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen by widening doors, installing stairlifts, hoists or through floor lifts
  • Provide safe access to part of an outdoor space
  • Make kitchen facilities accessible for more independent wheelchair users

a discretionary top-up of up to £10,000 is available, subject to an affordability check, only where the full £30,000 mandatory grant has been used.

What it will not fund

Applications not referred by an occupational therapist

How to apply

  1. Optionally check likely eligibility with the Foundations self assessment and means test calculator (adaptmyhome.org.uk)
  2. Adults: ask Lancashire County Council Adult Social Care for an Occupational Therapist home assessment; children (19 or below): ask Lancashire County Council's Inclusion Service
  3. The occupational therapist sends the council a referral with recommended adaptations
  4. The council registers the case, checks eligibility and visits to assess feasibility
  5. Complete the financial assessment and full application (including proof of home ownership or landlord consent)

the council may discuss moving to a more suitable home instead of adapting.
