London Borough of Sutton

Disabled Facilities Grant (Sutton)

Sutton Council's Disabled Facilities Grant helps disabled residents pay to adapt their home so they can keep living there, for example with ramps, a stair lift or a downstairs bathroom. The maximum mandatory grant is £30,000, and the amount depends on a means test of income and savings, except for adaptations for someone under 18. Applications start with an occupational therapy assessment, and people with rapidly progressing or life-limiting conditions are fast-tracked.

Who can apply

  • Disabled residents of the London Borough of Sutton who need changes to their home
  • You must be the owner, tenant, licensee or landlord of the property, intend to live there as your main home for the 5-year grant period, and, if you are a tenant, get your landlord's agreement
  • The council must consider the changes necessary, appropriate, reasonable and practical
  • The amount depends on a financial assessment of income, savings and investments, which is not applied if the adaptations are for someone under 18
  • Applications are prioritised by urgent risk and medical need
  • The council's policy excludes Sutton Council tenants from its housing assistance
  • If you sell within 5 years of a grant over £5,000, you will be asked to repay some of it, up to £10,000

What it funds

Adaptations to help you or someone you care for:

  • Get in and out of the home more easily
  • Move around inside the home more easily
  • Get essential facilities for the home

Changes could include widening doors and installing ramps, installing a stair lift, providing a downstairs bathroom, improving or providing a heating system, and adapting heating or lighting controls so they are easier to use.

What it will not fund

  • Work you have already completed
  • Work that has already started, unless there is a good reason why

How to apply

  1. Request an occupational therapy assessment (adults), or contact the council's children's team if the person is under 18
  2. The occupational therapy team talks to you about how you are managing at home and recommends equipment or changes
  3. If you are eligible for a grant, they refer you to the housing team
  4. A financial assessment (means test) decides how much you get, unless the adaptations are for someone under 18
