Godalming Town Council

Godalming Town Council Community Grants Fund

Small grants, normally under £1,500 (exceptionally up to £2,500), from Godalming Town Council for community initiatives that directly benefit the civic parish of Godalming or its residents. Unusually, an application must be 'sponsored' by at least two town councillors before it goes to committee, which meets in July, October and February. The same page also covers Neighbourhood CIL funding for infrastructure and multi-year Service Level Agreements, which follow separate processes.

Who can apply

  • Community groups and organisations (and residents, via councillors) whose initiative directly benefits the civic parish of Godalming or all or some of its residents
  • The application must be sponsored by at least two members of Godalming Town Council
  • Groups without a bank account can apply: the council holds the funds and pays suppliers or reimburses costs against receipts
  • The policy does not set organisation-type, income or track-record requirements for Community Grants

What it funds

  • Initiatives of benefit to the local community in the civic parish of Godalming, whether identified by councillors or brought to their attention by community groups and residents
  • Grants may be for an organisation that supports individuals (e.g. a youth organisation funding participation in a national or international event), but not to benefit a single individual
  • Priority goes to applications that advance the aims of the Town Council's Corporate Plan and that lever in or match other funds
  • Urgent applications from groups that need funding to continue operating can be made at any time

What it will not fund

  • Benefit to a single individual
  • A project that has already received town council grant funding in the same financial year
  • Charities or public service bodies operating overseas, or funds to help people outside the UK
  • Publicity costs, except where incidental to the main purpose of the grant

How to apply

  1. Find at least two Godalming town councillors willing to sponsor your application (councillor contact details are on the council's Councillors page)
  2. You or a sponsoring councillor email the Town Clerk (townclerk@godalming-tc.gov.uk) setting out: the aim of the initiative/project; who it will benefit; the sum applied for and what it will be used for; who will be responsible for delivery; and the names of the sponsoring councillors
  3. The Town Clerk confirms sponsorship with the councillors and puts the application to the next grant-awarding committee meeting (July, October or February)
  4. The committee decides in public; you may attend to hear your application discussed
  5. If awarded, provide evidence of how the grant was spent within one year and work with the council on recognising its contribution (e.g. press release/photo with the Mayor)

Urgent applications can go to the Town Clerk at any time with a covering letter explaining why they cannot wait (including why reserves cannot be used) and a full set of accounts.

Neighbourhood CIL applications (infrastructure) use a separate form; those received from November 2025 will be considered in late October/November 2026. Service Level Agreements must be received by the first Monday in August and are only awarded once per council administration - contact the Town Clerk.

Have ready

  • Email setting out the project aim, beneficiaries, sum requested and purpose, who will deliver it, and the two sponsoring councillors

Urgent applications also need a covering letter and a full set of accounts including current in-year balances, liabilities and assets.
