Who can apply

  • Any organisation with a cause that will benefit the wider public in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire
  • The Trust says an application from outside this area is unlikely to be supported
  • Large UK-wide charities are not excluded, but they are usually funded only if they have strong links to this area and the proposal could have a substantial impact
  • Applicants do not need to be registered charities
  • The form's options include registered charity, non-registered organisation, registered company and CIC
  • Privately owned and profit-distributing companies and LLPs will not normally be supported
  • The form asks whether the organisation has a board of trustees, a bank account in its own name, a safeguarding policy, the right policies for work with children or vulnerable adults, public liability insurance and qualifications where relevant, and permission for any work on land or buildings
  • There is no fixed gap between applications, but the Trustees like to spread funding, so regular applicants may be deferred for a couple of years

What it funds

Any cause that will benefit the wider public and the communities where Alan Boswell Group operates (Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire), in particular:

  • Community resources
  • Healthcare and mental health
  • The elderly, veterans and vulnerable communities
  • Animal welfare
  • Disaster recovery

The Trust can only fund activity that is charitable in law.

Registered charities can receive unrestricted grants.

Grants to organisations that are not registered charities are restricted to a specific charitable purpose.

There is no lower or upper limit on grants.

Every grant has one to three measurable objectives, agreed at the start of the funding period as part of the grant offer.

What it will not fund

  • Contributions to general appeals or circulars
  • Religious activities which are not for a wider public benefit
  • Public bodies to carry out their statutory obligations
  • Grant making by other organisations
  • Privately owned and profit-distributing companies or limited liability partnerships
  • Playground applications, unless for children with disabilities and/or complex health needs
  • Repeat applicants who have not completed the Trust's grant impact form

How to apply

  1. Check that your cause benefits the public in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire and is not on the exclusions list
  2. Complete the Trust's standard online application form (Microsoft Forms, linked from the Trust page). It covers organisation details and governance, contact details, the sector served, what the grant is for and why it is needed, the number of beneficiaries, project dates, the full project cost and how the rest will be funded, any Alan Boswell Group staff sponsor, and how you will report impact
  3. A sub-committee member reviews your application, and suitable applications go to the board of Trustees for a decision
  4. If successful, agree one to three measurable objectives as part of the grant offer. The grant is then paid
  5. After the grant, complete the Trust's grant impact form

Trustees will not support repeat applicants who have not completed the grant impact form. The Trustees take your answer on impact reporting into account, and future applications are considered only if the feedback you send matches what you promised.

Have ready

Note: The online form asks no uploads - it asks yes/no questions about governance, policies, insurance and bank account, plus your charity/company number if you have one.
