Who can apply

  • Community groups, schools, businesses, partner organisations, parish councils, landowners and managers, and individuals
  • Applicants must have a bank account, and community groups or charities must have formal terms of reference describing the purpose, scope and authority of the organisation
  • The project must be located within, or demonstrate clear links to, the Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape (the area around Arnside, Silverdale and neighbouring villages on the Cumbria/Lancashire border), must not be commercial or profit-making, and must be consistent with the Landscape Trust's charitable object of public benefit for residents and visitors

What it funds

Capital investment, or revenue costs (e.g. staff costs) directly linked to carrying out the activities in the application, for projects that conserve and enhance the National Landscape and/or help people connect with it and contribute to the National Landscape Management Plan. Encouraged:

  • Protecting flora and fauna
  • Restoring, enhancing or creating wildlife habitat or benefiting priority species
  • Improving ecological networks
  • Enhancing the coast or seascape
  • Restoring cultural or historic features
  • Developing sustainable tourism
  • Improving access and enjoyment, especially for people who may not otherwise have the opportunity
  • Promoting inclusivity and benefiting diverse audiences
  • Research, interpretation and celebration of the area's nature, history or culture
  • Connecting people (particularly young people and children) with the landscape
  • Traditional rural skills
  • Involving the local community or volunteers
  • Helping local communities move towards sustainable low-carbon living

Match funding or in-kind volunteer support is not essential but increases the chance of success.

What it will not fund

  • Projects eligible for total funding through Countryside Stewardship or the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme
  • Core operational costs (e.g. rent or salaries)
  • Commercial activities or projects likely to bring profit or financial reward to those managing the project
  • Projects that do not demonstrate clear public benefit (e.g. public access or engagement)
  • Projects that start before a grant offer is made by the Grants Panel
  • Repeat or annual applications for the same project, except in exceptional circumstances or a significant change in circumstances

How to apply

  1. Read the Grants Fund Guidance Notes (and optionally the examples of funded projects)
  2. Contact National Landscape staff before applying for support and guidance on your application (strongly advised)
  3. Email info@arnside-silverdale.org.uk to request an application form
  4. Complete and return the application form
  5. The Grants Panel (representatives of the National Landscape Partnership/team and the Landscape Trust) decides; applications under £200 are approved by the Trust's nominated representative and the National Landscape Manager
  6. If successful, sign a Grant Agreement before any money is paid; 50% is normally paid at the start and 50% on successful completion
  7. On completion, send a written report with receipted invoices and photographs (larger or longer grants also report at milestones and one year after completion)

The project must not start before a grant offer is made.

Awards over £4,000 may be made in exceptional circumstances; the Panel can reclaim money if the project is not carried out as agreed.
