Barker-Mill Foundation
Barker-Mill Foundation Grants
Donations from the Barker-Mill Foundation, a family trust based at Longdown near Marchwood on the eastern edge of the New Forest, for local charities, schools, Guide and Scout groups and other organisations, mainly in south west Hampshire. It gives priority to the more deprived local areas of Nursling and Rownhams, Redbridge, Millbrook and Totton, and to communities where the family has owned land (Lower Test Valley, Nursling, Ashurst, Colbury, Hounsdown, Longdown, Marchwood). Donations are normally no more than £5,000 and trustees meet quarterly. It makes around 50 donations a year and has given over £5 million since 1995.

Who can apply
- Charities, schools and other organisations based in south west Hampshire, including Guide and Scout groups

- Local applicants are favoured over those with only a Hampshire connection or presence, and organisations with no Hampshire connection are generally not supported
- Registered charity status is not required, but charities should give their number
- National charities and individuals are funded only in exceptional circumstances; individuals must be backed by a nominated organisation, preferably a registered charity
- Past recipients normally wait a year before receiving again
What it funds
- Donations to local charities, schools and organisations, for example Guide or Scout groups funding outdoor projects, or local charities raising funds for a community project
- The trustees' priorities include improving health and wellbeing, outdoor schemes for all ages, local organisations serving communities in challenging circumstances, and causes of community benefit
- The Foundation will contribute to core (unrestricted) funding but prefers donations restricted to specific projects or items of equipment
- For large projects it may pledge a donation conditional on the rest of the funding being raised (pledges lapse after two years)
- It also supports local medical research and the arts nationally
What it will not fund
- Single donations over £5,000, other than in exceptional cases
- Further donations within less than a year of a previous donation
- National charities, other than in exceptional circumstances
- Charities and organisations with no Hampshire connection (generally)
- Individuals, unless backed by a nominated organisation, which should be a registered charity (only in exceptional circumstances)
- Normally, commitments to a series of donations
How to apply
- Read the application guidelines on the Foundation's website
- Complete the online application form (or email the administrator), keeping it to no more than two sides of A4: describe your organisation (with website if you have one), what you want funding for, how much, and details of any specific project
- Give your charity number if registered, and for a large project state the overall target and how much has been raised so far
- Submit ideally within the two months before a quarterly trustees' meeting (usually March, June, September and December) and no later than two weeks before it; online applications are acknowledged by email
- If successful you are notified by email and paid by bank transfer
Postal applications are accepted but not acknowledged; online or email is preferred.
Where timing is critical the trustees may agree a donation between meetings; such applications must be made online or by email.
No notification is sent to unsuccessful applicants - assume you have not been successful if you hear nothing within 3 weeks after the meeting.
Have ready
Note: No documents are needed at application - the Foundation says there is no need to send accounts, business plans, drawings or publicity material and will ask for them if it wants to see them.
