Basil Houghton Memorial Trust

Basil Houghton Memorial Trust grants

Small grants from the Basil Houghton Memorial Trust (charity no. 1101947) for people with learning disabilities or learning difficulties and their family carers in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, given directly to individuals or through voluntary groups. Group grants normally do not exceed £1,500 per group per year and individual grants are up to £500. Grants must pay for something beyond what statutory bodies provide and help people 'fulfil a dream, meet an aspiration' or improve their quality of life. Trustees meet quarterly; the next deadline is 20 December 2026 for the 7 January 2027 meeting.

Who can apply

  • Voluntary organisations and groups based in Shropshire or Telford & Wrekin whose members are mostly or all people with a recognised learning disability or learning difficulty, where the majority of beneficiaries live in Shropshire and the grant mainly benefits residents of the area
  • Individuals with a learning disability or difficulty living in Shropshire (the application page also says Telford & Wrekin) can apply directly
  • No income limits or legal-structure requirements are stated

What it funds

Activities, trips, events, holidays and items that make a significant difference to people with learning disabilities or learning difficulties and their family carers, helping them:

  • Fulfil a dream
  • Meet an aspiration
  • Enjoy an improved quality of life

Group grants are considered on merit, taking into account the number of people who will benefit, and normally do not exceed £1,500 per group per year.

Individuals can apply for up to £500 (a lower limit of £350 applies to practical requests such as white goods, carpets, fittings and furniture).

What it will not fund

  • Services that are the responsibility of statutory bodies (grants must be additional to, or over and above, statutory provision)
  • People or groups outside Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin
  • Groups whose members are not mostly people with a recognised learning disability or difficulty

How to apply

  1. Check the criteria on the Grants (how do I apply) page
  2. Download the Group Application form (or the Individual Application form for individuals)
  3. Complete it and send it to the Trust so it arrives about 10 days before the next quarterly trustee meeting (next deadline 20 December 2026 for the 7 January 2027 meeting)
  4. Trustees consider applications at their quarterly meeting

Applications are accepted year-round, but processing can take up to three months, so do not apply too close to the date of a trip, event or holiday.

Meeting dates and deadlines are published on the Trust's News page.
