Office for Zero Emission Vehicles

Electric vehicle chargepoint grant for residential landlords

A government grant from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) covering 75% of the cost of buying and installing electric vehicle chargepoints at residential properties the applicant lets, up to £500 per socket and up to 200 sockets a year. It is open to residential landlords, including charities that own or manage residential property, but the applicant must be registered at Companies House or VAT registered. The work must be done by an OZEV-authorised installer, who claims the grant and deducts it from the invoice. The scheme has been extended for a final year and runs until 31 March 2027.

Who can apply

  • Residential landlords who own or manage property let for people to live in, including: landlords with property to let; right to manage or residents' management companies; freeholders of multi-unit properties; companies owning a building's common areas; public sector organisations; a 'charity that manages or owns residential property'; registered social housing providers; property management companies representing a landlord; and property factors in Scotland
  • Every applicant 'must be a business either registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC', so a charity qualifies only if it lets residential property to tenants and is a charitable company (or otherwise registered at Companies House) or is VAT registered
  • A charity that does not let housing (e.g. one using its own premises) cannot use this scheme; see the Workplace Charging Scheme instead
  • Property must be in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland

What it funds

  • 75% of the cost of buying and installing eligible residential EV chargepoint sockets, up to £500 per socket (raised from £350 on 1 April 2026), for up to 200 sockets per year across the applicant's sites (organisations under common control share one 200-socket limit)
  • Eligible properties are flats, houses and apartment blocks, including the communal areas of multi-unit properties
  • Each parking space must be:
  • Off-street
  • Private and clearly defined
  • Accessible to the tenant
  • Owned by the applicant or one they have the legal right to use

What it will not fund

  • Properties the applicant lives in
  • Non-residential properties
  • Properties used only for holiday accommodation
  • Chargepoints installed before OZEV confirms eligibility
  • Installations that are a mandatory requirement (e.g. Part S Building Regulations in England from 15 June 2022, Building (Scotland) Regulations from 5 June 2023, or a planning condition)
  • Properties in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man
  • Applicants without a Companies House registration number or VAT registration number
  • Chargepoints or installers that are not OZEV-authorised/eligible

How to apply

  1. Check the property, parking space and applicant eligibility and read the OZEV home and workplace grants terms and conditions
  2. Get a quote from an OZEV-authorised chargepoint installer for an eligible residential chargepoint
  3. Select 'Start new application' on the Find a grant page, create an account and submit the application with the supporting documents
  4. Wait for OZEV to confirm eligibility by email to you and your installer; do not install before this
  5. The installer completes the work, deducts the grant from your invoice and claims it from OZEV with photos and invoices

Before installation you are expected to sort out any electrical supply upgrade, maintenance, how electricity costs will be paid, accessibility and your property risk assessment.

The government may end or change the scheme and aims to give 4 weeks' notice.

Have ready

  • Quote from an OZEV-authorised installer
  • For landlords and charities letting property: a current, dated insurance policy showing the property address and that it is a rental property
  • For freeholders of multi-unit properties: Land Registry title showing freehold ownership
  • For RTM/RMC companies: Companies House listing and a document verifying your position (e.g. meeting minutes)
  • For property management companies: letter of appointment or management agreement plus the represented landlord's documents

Public sector bodies and registered social housing providers need only the installer quote.
