Who can apply
- Smaller local charities, with the trustees concentrating on those based in Birmingham and the immediate surrounding area
- Projects outside the West Midlands (or overseas) are considered only where the applicant is known to a trustee or recommended by someone known to a trustee with first-hand knowledge of the work
- Large national charities are unusual recipients
- Organisations already supported by, or that have applied to, the Quothquan Trust (which shares staff with this Trust) should not apply
- Successful applicants should wait at least ten months before applying again, and projects that were unsuccessful before should not reapply unless they have changed significantly
What it funds
- Local organisations helping people to improve their quality of life, with a preference for donations towards specific items and specific projects
- The majority of grants are one-off, normally £250 to £2,000; occasionally the Trust will fund a project annually for up to three years, subject to satisfactory project reports
- Christian social action projects involving outreach into the community through care are welcome
What it will not fund
- Large appeals
- Activities which are primarily the responsibility of central or local government or some other responsible body
- Animal welfare
- Church buildings (restoration, improvements, renovations or new ones)
- Environmental conservation and protection of wildlife and landscape
- Expeditions and overseas trips
- Hospitals and health centres
- Individuals, including students (rare exceptions only when recommended by someone known to the trustees)
- Large national charities, even where there is a local project (unusual)
- Loans and business finance
- Medical research projects
- Overseas appeals and projects, or projects outside the West Midlands, unless the applicant is known to or recommended to a trustee
- Purely evangelistic projects
- Promotion of any religion other than Christianity
- Schools, universities and colleges
- Projects that have been unsuccessful before
- Organisations that already receive support from, or have applied to, the Quothquan Trust
How to apply
- Check your project against the exclusion list
- Write a letter of appeal (there is no application form) including a brief description of the organisation's activities, details of the project and its overall cost, what funds have already been raised and how the rest will be raised
- Enclose a copy of your latest accounts (including any associated or parent organisation) and any leaflets or supporting documents
- Post the appeal to: Appeals, Alfred Haines Charitable Trust, Dale Farm, Worcester Lane, Sutton Coldfield B75 5PR
- Trustees consider written applications at quarterly meetings; the Trust contacts you only if it needs more information
- If successful, you receive a cheque and covering letter, must complete an official receipt, and must send a project report, usually after ten months
Applications by email are not accepted, receipt is not acknowledged, and unsuccessful applicants are not notified; if no cheque arrives within five months the application was unsuccessful.
Questions can be phoned to 0121 323 3236 (shared with related charities; say the call is for Alfred Haines). Applications may be transferred to the Quothquan Trust if more relevant.
