Who can apply

  • For grants of £5,000 or less: incorporated not-for-profits (CIO, CIC limited by guarantee, charitable companies) registered with the Charity Commission, Companies House or the FCA Mutuals Public Register; registered charities that are not incorporated, though these may only use the grant for self-employed workers and not PAYE staff; and small unincorporated or unregistered organisations whose annual income is under £10,000, provided the grant would not push them above £10,000 this financial year
  • For grants over £5,000: incorporated not-for-profits, and non-incorporated registered charities on the same PAYE restriction
  • Not eligible: for-profit, overseas and statutory organisations, including schools and hospitals
  • Every applicant, whatever its size, must have at least three unrelated trustees, committee members or directors, none registered as a Person with Significant Control, and a governing document
  • Applicants must evidence a track record in Leeds and have been operating for at least two years
  • The amount requested must be at least 50% of the total cost of the activity, and only one application per organisation is considered

What it funds

  • Activities local people have been consulted on, where the proposal responds to the needs they identified
  • Support for keeping community spaces open, and targeted help for people facing food and fuel poverty or other effects of the rising cost of living
  • Previously funded work includes supporting asylum seekers with food and clothing, helping families access baby essentials such as cots and bedding, and street-level youth work for young people disengaged from mainstream services

What it will not fund

  • Activity or costs already incurred
  • Anything discriminatory, or that excludes people without good justification
  • Promotion of a political or religious viewpoint
  • Activity primarily benefiting animals
  • Capital appeals for building projects
  • Grant-making on to other organisations or individuals, and applications from individuals
  • Statutory organisations or activity
  • Overseas organisations, expeditions or travel
  • Organisations that received a three-year grant in 2025 cannot apply to this round

How to apply

  • Apply through Leeds Community Foundation's online grants portal
  • An account must be created on first use — the system was recently replaced, so previous applicants will find it unfamiliar
  • Guidance, criteria and an application planner are published alongside the form
