The 29th May 1961 Charitable Trust
The 29th May 1961 Charitable Trust grants
General grants from a Coventry-based trust to UK registered charities and exempt or excepted charities, for capital, core or project costs across a wide range of causes. The trust has a particular focus on the West Midlands, especially Coventry and Warwickshire, but also funds charities elsewhere in the UK. Applications are open all year and trustees decide four times a year. There is no set grant size: applicants ask for what they need, as a one-off payment or spread over two or three years.
- You could get
- Up to £3,000,000
- no fixed round
- Deadline
- Rolling
- apply any time
- Effort
- Light
- short form, little evidence needed
Who can apply
- UK registered charities (including CIOs), or organisations deemed exempt or excepted under Charity Commission guidance
- CICs, non-charitable groups and individuals cannot apply
- New organisations without a full set of accounts can apply if they upload management accounts that include an income and expenditure account and a balance sheet
- There is no income limit
- Charities anywhere in the UK can apply, but there is 'a particular focus on charities operating in the West Midlands, in particular, the Coventry and Warwickshire area', reflecting the settlor's wishes
- Past grant holders must wait two years from their last grant payment, and unsuccessful applicants must wait 13 months from the date they were told
- Only one application can be under consideration at a time
- The applicant must have a safeguarding policy, and the form asks for any reportable safeguarding incidents in the last five years if the organisation works with children or adults at risk
What it funds
A wide range of charitable activities. Grants are made for both capital and revenue purposes, and the application form offers project-specific costs, core or running costs, or capital costs. Grants can be one-off or spread over two or three years (trustees will consider multi-year requests, usually of up to three years).
- For reporting only, the trust groups grants under Arts and Museums
- Conservation and Protection
- Employment, Education and Training
- Homelessness and Housing
- Leisure, Recreation and Youth
- Medical (not medical research)
- Offenders
- Social Welfare
Trustees say they are interested in any initiative that passes the Eligibility Quiz, whatever the category.
There is no stated minimum or maximum: 'You should apply for what you need', and trustees may award a different amount from the one requested.
What it will not fund
- Individuals
- Medical research
- Community Interest Companies (CICs) and other organisations that are not registered, exempt or excepted charities
- Projects outside the UK (the trustees do not typically fund them)
- Organisations that received a grant in the last two years (counted from the last grant payment)
- Organisations whose application was turned down in the last 13 months
- A second application while one is already under consideration
How to apply
- Read the Grant Terms & Conditions, the Safeguarding Policy and the Application Form Guidance (the application form questions are available as a PDF)
- Complete the online Eligibility Quiz; passing it gives access to the online application form
- Complete the online form: organisation details and charitable status, a summary of up to 400 characters, a primary named contact, a named trustee (if the contact is not a trustee), financial information, the funding type, the amount requested and whether it should be paid in one go or over two or three years, a 'Towards the costs of…' funding descriptor, and the main 'Your Request' summary
- Upload any supporting files just before submitting, tick 'I confirm' and click 'Submit'; you receive an email confirming receipt with a copy of your application
- Your application goes to the next available quarterly trustees' meeting (normally March, June, September or December), and you are told the outcome by email
- If a grant is offered, complete the grant offer acceptance form with your bank details and a recent statement or paying-in slip; payment is by bank transfer
There are no deadlines. If the project has a firm start date, apply at least 18 weeks before the funding is needed.
A saved draft must be completed and submitted within 30 days of saving, or it is lost. Always use the most recent 'Save and Resume Later' link.
Applications by post or email are not normally accepted. The trust does not give feedback on unsuccessful applications.
Have ready
- Most recent audited or independently examined accounts (a link if they are published on the charity regulator's website; otherwise upload them)
- Latest management accounts with income and expenditure account and balance sheet, if the organisation is too new to have annual accounts
- Optional supporting files such as a project budget (Word, Excel, PDF or JPG; 25MB total)
If a grant is awarded, you will need bank or building society details and a photo or scan of a recent statement or paying-in slip. Grant holders must send an end-of-grant report, or a report for each year of a multi-year grant.
