The Dodgson Foundation
Dodgson Foundation Annual Grants
Annual grants to local charities working with people aged over 55 in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding Sussex area. The Foundation is particularly concerned with the effect of isolation on mental health, and says it can be flexible where it sees a need. It writes each year to organisations it has supported before but welcomes new approaches. A separate route exists for grants to individuals, which only Social Services or certain NGOs may use.

Who can apply
- Charities, NGOs, local authorities and other agencies across the area from the Adur to the Ouse, south of the Downs
- The core grant-making policy is aimed at people in need aged over 55 in the City of Brighton and Hove and the immediate area
- Where an annual grant was made in the past year, the new application must be accompanied by a brief report on how it was used
What it funds
- A contribution to an organisation's general overheads, or to the costs of a specific project
- In both cases the application asks what the costs comprise, how they are currently funded, what the shortfall is, the request as a percentage of those costs, and roughly how many clients will benefit directly
- The Foundation particularly encourages collaboration with other charities and agencies, and expects other sources of finance to have been sought
What it will not fund
- Grants cannot be made to individuals through this route — requests on behalf of an individual must come from local authority Social Services or certain NGOs, never from the individual, their family or friends
- Requests from national charities to underwrite general expenditure are not encouraged, though a local branch may be considered
How to apply
- Download the MAJOR Grant Application form from the Foundation's website and return it by email to the CEO with any supporting papers
- Applications should be returned by 31 March, as an annual grant is treated as being for the Dodgson financial year commencing 1 April
Have ready
Latest accounts, current year budget or other financial workings; and, if a grant was received in the previous year, a brief report on how it was spent.
