Who can apply

  • UK registered charities, Charitable Incorporated Organisations, and organisations exempt or excepted from registration under Charity Commission guidance
  • Applicants need "at least one year's worth of annual accounts as a registered charity" (independently audited/examined accounts, or the Charity Commission annual return for charities under £25,000 income)
  • Work must take place in the UK or UK Overseas Territories
  • Organisations that have received a grant or a declination from the Foundation within the past 12 months cannot apply
  • Schools qualify if registered/exempt charities (otherwise via a PTA or 'Friends of' charity); universities/colleges need Vice-Chancellor-level confirmation and may have only one application at a time

What it funds

  • Operating/core costs (general running costs, including a portion of salary bills), specific projects, and capital projects, for charities working in welfare, youth, community, environment, education, health, arts, heritage and faith

Core grants are unlikely to exceed 10% of the organisation's total annual budget.

Project grants are typically 10-20% of total project cost.

Capital grants generally no more than 10% of total capital cost, and for local community capital projects (village halls, community centres, places of worship) "likely to be no greater than £30,000 regardless of the project size".

The Foundation recommends having raised about half the cost before applying.

What it will not fund

  • One-off events, short-term activities and sponsorship
  • Feasibility studies
  • Mass fundraising
  • Work outside the UK (UK Overseas Territories excepted)
  • Public art or monuments
  • Endowments or building up reserves
  • Organisations whose main activity is campaigning
  • Emergency rescue services
  • Salaries of specific posts
  • New organisations without a track record of annual accounts
  • Animal welfare charities (sanctuaries, hospitals, rescues)
  • Counselling-focused charities (except national UK-wide services)
  • Medical research (except translational research by major specialist organisations)
  • Operating costs of hospices and educational institutions
  • Activities or projects already completed, or due to finish before a decision is made
  • Community Benefit Societies
  • Organisations awaiting charity registration, or groups with income under £5,000 unable to register
