Community Foundation North East (serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland)

The Henderson Family Fund

Grants of £300 to £1,000 for individual young people aged 16-25 in Northumberland who face financial barriers to taking up an educational course, covering costs such as course fees, rent, travel or tutoring. This is a grant for an individual, not for an organisation's own work: a voluntary or community organisation must apply on the young person's behalf and is wholly responsible for the grant, and the foundation does not accept applications direct from individuals. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Who can apply

  • For individual young people aged 16-25 living in Northumberland who are experiencing hardship and want to take up an educational course but face financial barriers
  • The application must be made by a voluntary or community organisation on the young person's behalf; that organisation is wholly responsible for the grant
  • Applications direct from individuals are not accepted
  • The applicant must be registered on the Community Foundation's grantee portal
  • Recipients must later provide evidence of enrolment/attendance and progress/completion

What it funds

  • Costs that remove financial barriers to study for a young person aged 16-25 taking up an educational course, for example course fees, rent, travel or tutor costs
  • Grants are awarded on condition that evidence of enrolment/attendance and of progress/completion is provided

What it will not fund

  • Applications made directly by individuals (an organisation must apply on their behalf)
  • Young people outside Northumberland or outside the 16-25 age range
  • Cost-of-living support (the foundation has no individual funds for cost-of-living issues)
  • Activities that have already taken place

How to apply

  1. Optionally call Elaine Holdsworth on 0191 222 0945 (eh@communityfoundation.org.uk) for an informal discussion
  2. Register your organisation's contact on the Community Foundation grantee portal (allow up to two working days for registration to be approved)
  3. Complete the online application on behalf of the young person, giving their age and status, what the money is for and a costed breakdown
  4. Upload a supporting statement and a bank statement, then submit

Rolling; applications can be made at any time.

If awarded, evidence of the young person's enrolment/attendance and progress/completion must be provided.

Have ready

  • Supporting statement of no more than two sides of A4 (12-point) showing how the request meets the fund's criteria
  • Copy bank statement less than 6 months old

Documents are from the foundation's Individual application help notes (Oct 2022); the fund page does not say whether the organisation-form or individual-form route is used, so check with Elaine before applying.
