Environment and Zero Carbon Grant

Grants of £50 to £1,000 from North West Leicestershire District Council for simple, practical, environmentally focused community projects in the district, such as energy-efficiency upgrades, green-space improvements, tree planting, biodiversity, recycling, or cycling and walking schemes. Applicants must put in cash match funding equal to the grant, so a project must be worth at least £100, and it has to be delivered within 12 months. Unlike the council's Small Grant Scheme, parish and town councils can apply.

Who can apply

  • Non-profit organisations delivering activities or services in North West Leicestershire, and town and parish councils in North West Leicestershire
  • Projects must benefit only North West Leicestershire residents
  • Non-profit means constituted groups (associations, clubs, societies), registered charities or social enterprises
  • Applicants need a constitution or formal set of rules, a bank account in the group's name, a safeguarding policy if working with children, young people or vulnerable adults, relevant policies, procedures and insurance, and landowner permission where needed
  • Schools and PTAs cannot apply, but independently constituted Parent/Friend Associations can
  • One grant per organisation per year

What it funds

Environmentally focused community projects that protect or improve the local environment or reduce carbon impact, for example:

  • General environmental improvements and climate-related initiatives
  • Energy-efficiency upgrades to buildings such as LED lighting or roof insulation
  • Schemes encouraging cycling and walking
  • Green-space enhancements such as community orchards, wildflower meadows and tree or hedge planting
  • Equipment for composting, recycling or litter-picking
  • Projects promoting biodiversity

A cash match of £50 to £1,000 is required (in-kind support does not count), so the minimum project value is £100.

Projects must be delivered within 12 months.

What it will not fund

  • Organisations with a large cash flow surplus
  • Funding requested after the activity or project has taken place
  • Schools and Parent Teacher Associations (Parent/Friend Associations properly constituted independently of the school may apply)
  • Religious activities
  • Political activities or political organisations
  • Activities or projects that do not benefit people who live in North West Leicestershire
  • Private organisations or individuals
  • Anything posing a potential reputational risk to North West Leicestershire District Council
  • Organisations that have already received an NWL Zero Carbon Grant this year
  • In-kind contributions as match funding

How to apply

  1. Optionally download the Environment and Zero Carbon Grant application questions to plan your answers
  2. Complete the online 'Apply for an Environment and Zero Carbon Grant' form by Monday 1 March 2027

The deadline applies unless the funds are allocated earlier. Applications received after 1 March 2027 are not reviewed until the week commencing 29 March 2027.

Recipients must complete monitoring forms, provide receipts and photographs, and credit NWL Environment and Zero Carbon Grants in publicity.
