Berkshire Community Foundation

Small & Vital Fund

Berkshire Community Foundation's Small & Vital Fund gives grants of up to £1,000 to very small Berkshire charities and community groups - those with an annual income of £10,000 or less - and is open for applications all year round. It is designed as quick, flexible support to help tiny organisations keep going and respond to local need, rather than for new capital or large projects. This record profiles Small & Vital because it is the only one of BCF's five core grant rounds currently open; the other four (Grants for Older People, Priority Grants, Surviving Winter and Grassroots Grants) are all closed, with Grassroots Grants next to open in January 2027.

Who can apply

  • Not-for-profit organisations with an annual income of £10,000 or less that operate within Berkshire and provide direct benefit to people or communities in the county
  • Eligible legal forms are registered charities, Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs), Community Interest Companies (CICs) and constituted voluntary or community groups operating on a non-profit basis; individuals cannot apply
  • The organisation must have been operating for at least 12 months and be able to supply 12 months of financial records including its most recent annual accounts, demonstrate sound financial management, and be up to date with reporting on any previous BCF grant
  • Governance requirements are a governing document (constitution or equivalent), a management committee or board of trustees, and a bank account in the organisation's name with at least two unrelated signatories
  • An equality and diversity policy is required, plus a safeguarding policy if working with children or vulnerable adults
  • BCF funds work improving the lives of disadvantaged people and addressing inequality, hardship and community need, so the application must evidence local demand, set out clear intended outcomes and include an itemised budget
  • Organisations may receive only one BCF grant per financial year, excluding Surviving Winter and donor-advised grants

What it funds

Flexible support for the ongoing work of very small community organisations. BCF says it is open to funding a wide range of projects and gives examples of organisations that:

  • Bring people together and reduce isolation
  • Provide education and training opportunities
  • Support people facing challenges or disadvantage
  • Improve wellbeing, confidence or life skills
  • Provide practical help to those who need it most
  • Strengthen the community

Applications are judged on the difference the project will make, the applicant's connection to the community it serves, how realistic and achievable the plans are, the level of need being responded to, and any previous BCF funding or outstanding monitoring reports.

What it will not fund

  • Organisations with an annual income above £10,000 (they must apply to another BCF round)
  • Individuals
  • Projects delivered primarily outside Berkshire
  • Costs already incurred - retrospective funding for activities already completed
  • Organisations operating for under 12 months, or unable to provide 12 months of financial records
  • Regional or national charities without a clearly defined Berkshire branch
  • Organisations holding more than 12 months of unrestricted reserves
  • Organisations with an annual operating budget above 2 million pounds
  • Political or religious campaigning
  • Medical research
  • Large capital projects, including vehicles, property purchase or major building works over £5,000
  • One-off events such as award ceremonies, unless they directly address significant need and demonstrate clear outcomes
