The Brelms Trust grants
Grants of £1,000 to £7,000 a year, one-off or for up to three years (maximum £21,000), for small and medium-sized registered charities based in Yorkshire and benefiting Yorkshire communities, with annual income under £300,000. Grants can cover core costs, staff salaries, volunteer expenses, running costs or direct service delivery, with priority for charities working at the heart of communities to tackle disadvantage. Applications are assessed all year round and awards made quarterly; the current round will be awarded in January 2027.

Who can apply
- Charities registered with the Charity Commission, based and embedded in Yorkshire (postal address must be in Yorkshire) and directly benefiting only Yorkshire communities
- Small and medium-sized charities with a current annual income under £300,000, usually with unrestricted reserves of 6 months or less (large reserves need explaining)
- National charities only if the project is specifically for Yorkshire with a local board of trustees and local control of budgets, usually evidenced by published accounts; Yorkshire branches controlled by a head office outside Yorkshire are unlikely to succeed
- Must have accounts (draft accounts accepted for newly registered charities)
- Faith-based charities only for activities open to all that do not promote a faith
What it funds
Core costs and specific projects for small and medium-sized charities, including staff salaries, volunteer expenses, running costs and direct service provision. The Trust funds charities enabling disadvantaged people to play a fuller role in the community, addressing issues such as:
- Arts, education and sport
- Debt and benefits advice
- Domestic abuse and sexual violence
- Older people facing isolation
- Physical and learning disabilities
- Physical and mental health
- Prevention of re-offending
- Refugees, asylum-seekers and ethnic minorities
- Support for disadvantaged communities
Grants are £1,000 to £7,000 a year, one-off or for up to 3 consecutive years (so up to £21,000 in total).
The Trust does not generally fund the whole cost of a project and applicants should show wider funding plans.
What it will not fund
- Organisations without charitable status
- Organisations not registered at the Charity Commission
- Charities with an annual income of £300,000 or more
- National charities, unless the project is based in Yorkshire for the specific benefit of the Yorkshire community with embedded local management and financial control
- Applications from individuals or student gap year costs
- Donations for specific or general appeals
- Organisations that advance religion or faith-based activities in their charitable objects, unless the funded activity serves people regardless of belief and does not promote a faith
- Party political organisations
- Retrospective funding
- Previous grantees re-applying within 12 months of the end of their grant period (the fallow period)
- Applicants re-applying within 12 months of a rejection
How to apply
- Read all sections of the website (Our Objects, What Do We Fund?, We Do NOT Fund…, How to Apply and the Application Guidance Notes)
- Complete the online Application Form (charity profile, three years of accounts figures, reserves, funding request, beneficiaries, sustainability, other funding applications, bank details)
- Attach your latest Trustees' Annual Report and Accounts and a budget, then submit online (no paper copies)
- You receive an acknowledgement email with a PDF copy of your application within a few minutes
- Trustees assess applications throughout the year and award grants quarterly; decisions are emailed
Trustees may offer less than requested, may visit before deciding, and do not discuss rejections or allow appeals.
The Trust does not assess eligibility enquiries; it only assesses completed application forms. Contact is by email only (admin@brelmstrust.org.uk).
Grantees must submit an annual Monitoring and Evaluation report; later years' payments depend on it.
Have ready
- Most recent Trustees' Annual Report and Accounts
- Budget for the project or activity, showing which part the Brelms grant would cover
Newly registered charities can send draft accounts; if your last accounts are over 15 months old or reserves have changed a lot, give up-to-date figures (e.g. draft accounts).
