Byfleet United Charity

Byfleet United Charity Grants

A very local charity running two separate grant schemes for Byfleet and West Byfleet: hardship grants for individuals in need, and Community Grants for clubs, schools and organisations based in or serving the Ancient Parish of Byfleet. Individual grants are in kind or near-cash — furniture, white goods, school uniforms, supermarket vouchers — and need proof of a means-tested benefit. Community Grants are aimed at financial hardship and food poverty, wellbeing and social isolation, and educational attainment for disadvantaged children; recent awards reported on the site range from £1,000 to £15,000. The charity also runs sheltered accommodation, which is not a grant.

Who can apply

  • Two distinct routes
  • Individuals: you must have lived in Byfleet or West Byfleet for more than 12 months and be in receipt of a means-tested benefit (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support, Tax Credits, income-based JSA, income-related ESA or Income Support)
  • If you have recently moved to the area or simply have a low income you are told to contact the Grants Manager, who may still be able to help; applications may be made by someone else on your behalf and professional referrals are welcome
  • Community organisations: clubs, schools and organisations either based in the Ancient Parish of Byfleet or serving its residents — no income limit, governance form or track-record requirement is published

What it funds

For individuals: furniture and homewares, kitchen appliances (white goods), school uniforms, supermarket vouchers, clothing and footwear, education resources, payment of services, electrical goods, and debt and arrears assistance where the applicant is working with Citizens Advice or another debt charity. For community organisations, three key areas:

  • Alleviating financial hardship and food poverty (foodbanks, community fridge, Citizens Advice outreach, Christmas hampers)
  • Improving wellbeing and reducing social isolation (sports clubs, men's groups, befriending, gardening groups)
  • Improving educational attainment for disadvantaged children and young people (annual school grants, laptops and IT equipment, sports equipment, extra school resources, workshops, dyslexia and ASD/ADHD testing, uniform assistance, young carers' outings)

What it will not fund

  • Dental and medical costs (individual applicants)
  • Vet fees (individual applicants)
  • Property adaptations or upgrades (individual applicants)
  • Costs you have already paid for (individual applicants)

supermarket vouchers and food are never issued directly from the charity's Stoop Court office
