Carlton Hayes Mental Health Charity
Carlton Hayes Mental Health Charity Grants
Grants to mental health charities and organisations working in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, from a charity established in 1834. There are two routes: smaller grants of up to £5,000, handled by an administrator between trustee meetings, and larger grants above £5,000, which can be single payments or spread over two or three years and require a panel interview. The trustees particularly favour grants that unlock funding from elsewhere, and will not replace what statutory agencies should be paying for.

Who can apply
- Locally registered charities and organisations working in the mental health sector in Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland, supporting individuals with limited means
- Beneficiaries must be residents of the City of Leicester and the Counties of Leicestershire and Rutland - that is the Trust's geographical remit and it is a hard limit
- The charity rarely makes grants to individuals and relies heavily on statutory and voluntary organisations to advise where support is best offered; individuals must apply through a recognised agency, which will be asked about family income, professional recommendation and value for money
- A bidding organisation must be open to all, or have clear non-discriminatory admission criteria
- Grant recipients must acknowledge the charity in publicity and supply a written report on how the funds were used - if no report is received, they will not be considered again
What it funds
- Support for the work of mental health care and support organisations, for people of limited means who have mental health problems
- Patient comforts and activities inside and outside hospital that are judged beneficial but unlikely to be available from the NHS
- Occasionally, the travelling expenses of patients and carers
- Larger grants, aimed at more strategic benefits:
- Training of professionals, patients or carers
- Research
- The creation of new care or treatment protocols
- Support for advocacy services
- Better rehabilitation services
- Support for carers of people with mental illness
- Support for voluntary organisations reaching larger numbers of clients
- Short-term support for innovative new projects or organisations with a realistic chance of providing mental health care not otherwise available in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
the trustees count as mental health problems mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia, depression, PTSD), neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. autism, ADHD), intellectual disabilities and dementias (e.g. Alzheimer's).
What it will not fund
- Anything that replaces statutory provision - specifically precluded by the terms of the Trust
- Proposals the trustees judge that statutory agencies should provide
- Direct applications from individuals - these must be channelled through a recognised agency
- Beneficiaries outside the City of Leicester and the Counties of Leicestershire and Rutland
- Bidding organisations that are not open to all, or whose admission criteria are discriminatory
- Capital developments that will incur ongoing revenue costs, other than in exceptional circumstances
- Long-term funding of organisations
- Costs associated with the employment of permanent staff to undertake a project (applications including these are unlikely to be successful)
- The costs of administration or the overheads (including staff costs) of the applicant organisation (applications including these are unlikely to be successful)
How to apply
- Read the Information for Grant Applicants and, for bids above £5,000, the Guidance for Applications for Larger Grants
- For larger grants, approach the trustees informally first to gauge whether a bid is likely to be received sympathetically
- Download the application form from the Grant Applications page (one form for all bids), or complete the online form
- Submit the completed form by upload through the website, by post, or by fax
- Officers read the application and may come back for clarification or more information
- For larger grants, trustees decide whether to invite representatives to a panel interview or to reject at this stage
for larger grants the trustees may attach further conditions of approval after the interview
grant payments are made only into an authorised bank account, and progress reports must evidence that the grant was spent in line with the approved application
