What it funds

Environment, heritage and engagement projects within the Forest of Bowland AONB (National Landscape), or within a 2km buffer around it where they clearly benefit the National Landscape. Projects must achieve at least three of these objectives:

  • Improve, conserve and protect important landscapes and habitats
  • Provide information for visitors about the area's special qualities and facilities
  • Improve access for all sectors of the community
  • Maintain the landscape and access to it to improve visitor enjoyment
  • Improve and promote the built and cultural heritage
  • Improve the appearance of tourism, heritage and community facilities
  • Demonstrate commitment through match funding (not other Forest of Bowland AONB grants), maintenance, in-kind contributions or own fundraising

Up to £750 including VAT if the applicant is not VAT registered; up to 100% funding may be available, with an in-kind contribution expected.

Volunteer time can be counted at £7 per person hour.

What it will not fund

  • Projects outside the Forest of Bowland AONB and its 2km buffer zone
  • Projects benefiting only an individual or business without clear benefit to the wider community or visitors
  • Other Forest of Bowland AONB grant sources counted as match funding

How to apply

  1. Read the Grants Guidance notes and check the project meets at least three of the objectives; for advice or help with the form contact chair@championbowland.org.uk or the National Landscape office on 01200 448000
  2. Download the application form (PDF or Word) and complete it: project description and need, location within the AONB, how the project meets each objective, a cost breakdown (volunteer time at £7 per person hour) and other income or in-kind contributions

  4. The National Landscape Team processes the application and the Trustees assess it, possibly taking advice from council officers, the Environment Agency, the Wildlife Trust and others
  5. If awarded, complete the project and submit a brief final report, invoices as proof of expenditure and photographs; the project is monitored before payment

No deadlines are published; applications appear to be accepted at any time.

Payment is usually in arrears; contact Champion Bowland if payment in advance is needed.
