Sheffield Town Trust Grants

Grants for organisations working for the benefit of the city of Sheffield and its inhabitants, from a trust originally established in 1297 that supports around 140 groups a year. Grants range from a few hundred pounds to several thousand, with many between £500 and £3,000. Trustees meet quarterly and applications close on 8 January, 8 April, 8 July and 8 October at 12 noon. Non-charities can apply provided they are non-profit and carrying out charitable purposes.

Who can apply

  • Organisations, charities and groups whose objectives are to help Sheffield and its citizens
  • The Trust can only help organisations that work for the benefit of the city of Sheffield
  • Non-charities can apply, and would normally be non-profit-making organisations carrying out charitable purposes
  • National organisations will only be funded if it can be established that the grant will be used exclusively in Sheffield or for the benefit of Sheffield or its inhabitants, and in that case the applicant is expected to give the name and contact details of a local contact or organiser
  • The applicant should be credible and must be able to demonstrate the sustainability of the organisation
  • Successful applicants are not normally expected to apply again until two years have passed; if applying sooner, state clearly why
  • A rejected application can be resubmitted - the Trust says it may be worth trying again

What it funds

  • Charitable and public uses for the benefit of Sheffield as a whole and its inhabitants
  • The Trust has supported organisations working with the elderly, young people, the arts, people with disabilities, sports and community events, and projects relating to buildings, heritage and the rural environment
  • Church buildings are supported where those buildings are used by the local community
  • Grants may be made conditional on work commencing on a project

What it will not fund

  • Individuals
  • Organisations not working for the benefit of Sheffield and its inhabitants
  • Organisations based outside Sheffield, unless the purpose of the charity is to help those in Sheffield
  • Animal charities
  • Political organisations
  • Religious groups - though support for church buildings used by the local community will be considered
  • Churches themselves, as distinct from their buildings
  • Further applications from successful applicants until two years have passed, unless you explain why

How to apply

  1. Read the Frequently Asked Questions page before starting
  2. Read the application questions and draft your answers and documents in advance - you cannot save an application or return to it, so it must be completed in one go
  3. Complete the online application form and upload your supporting documents
  4. Submit by 12 noon on the deadline: 8 January, 8 April, 8 July or 8 October
  5. You get an automated acknowledgement with a PDF of your application
  6. Shortly after the deadline you are asked to contact one of the trustees to discuss the application; trustees sometimes arrange to meet you
  7. The trustee reports to the quarterly trustees' meeting, where the decision is made, and you are notified by email within a few weeks

if you cannot apply online, contact the Trust and they will arrange another route

grant recipients must complete a feedback form or send a short update report within six months of the award

the Trust also runs a three-year Subscription List for core running costs; the next application window is May 2027
