Bradford Council (Shipley Area Committee)
Shipley Community Chest
Small Bradford Council grants of up to £500 for non-profit voluntary and community groups that operate in, or benefit people living in, the Shipley Constituency (Baildon, Bingley, Shipley, Wharfedale and Windhill & Wrose areas). Grants pay for community activities that could not go ahead without help, such as equipment, one-off events, building improvements and start-up costs for new groups. Applications use a paper/Word form returned to the Shipley Area Co-ordinator's Office and are decided by a Grants Advisory Group.

Who can apply
- Non-profit voluntary organisations with open membership (no discrimination on grounds of sex, race, religion, occupation or opinion) that operate in, or benefit people who live in, the Shipley Constituency area of Bradford district
- The group must have a constitution; an unconstituted group must apply through a constituted organisation such as a local community centre or parish/town council
- Groups working with children or vulnerable adults need a safeguarding policy and enhanced DBS checks, plus appropriate health and safety arrangements
- Groups that received a grant must have returned their report and receipts to apply again
What it funds
Community-based activities that benefit the community and could not go ahead without financial help, for example:
- Equipment ('from pots and pans to plants and publicity')
- One-off events
- Building improvements
- Start-up costs for new groups
Ongoing costs such as venue hire and staffing are funded only as part of a start-up grant for a new organisation.
Special consideration goes to projects tackling deprivation and disadvantage; applications are particularly welcome from new projects, projects linked to the City of Culture and previously unfunded groups, and are viewed more favourably where other funding or fundraising has been secured (including approaching a parish or town council where there is one).
The total for a project crossing constituency boundaries will not normally exceed £500.
What it will not fund
- Ongoing revenue costs such as room hire, insurance, salaries and staffing (e.g. speakers' or tutors' fees) and rent, except as part of a start-up grant for a new organisation
- Religious or political activities
- Retrospective funding (events or purchases that have already taken place)
- Secondary fundraising
- School curricular activities
- Trips, except in exceptional circumstances
- The same or a repeated project already funded in previous years
- More than one grant per financial year (normally)
- Groups that have not returned the report and receipts for a previous grant
- Projects that contravene the Council's equality and diversity policies
