Who can apply

  • Voluntary and community groups based in Shropshire (Shropshire Council area, not Telford and Wrekin) that mainly serve Shropshire residents
  • New start-up groups operating for under 12 months (up to £300) need a bank account in the group's name, at least two unrelated people and a simple written statement of the group's aims and objectives
  • Established groups (up to £1,000) must have been active locally for at least 12 months, have an annual income under £50,000, be locally managed and largely volunteer-led, meet local community needs, and have a governing document with the group's name, aims, objects, a dissolution clause, a list of trustees/committee members and their signatures, plus a bank account in the organisation's name
  • Groups do not need to be registered charities but must be formally constituted; charities, CICs, Community Benefit Societies and community groups can apply

What it funds

  • Costs that help a grassroots group grow, develop and reach more people
  • Start-up funding (up to £300) is seed money for new initiatives or new community support groups, covering start-up costs such as:
  • Materials
  • Equipment
  • Room hire
  • Volunteer expenses
  • Insurance
  • Established groups funding (up to £1,000) prioritises requests with a long-term benefit for the organisation's capacity and sustainability, for example:
  • Training for staff or volunteers
  • Volunteer expenses
  • Equipment or furniture
  • Promotional materials
  • Developing a website or social media presence
  • Room hire
  • Core costs that help the group extend its reach

What it will not fund

  • General fundraising appeals
  • Ongoing staff salaries
  • Large capital or building projects
  • Parties or one-off events
  • Activities that have already taken place
  • Refreshment costs for people attending events
  • Organisations based outside Shropshire, including groups in Telford and Wrekin (border locations considered if mainly serving Shropshire residents)
  • Individuals and sole traders
  • Organisations that can distribute profits privately (e.g. companies limited by shares, organisations without a suitable asset lock)
  • Applications made on behalf of another group or organisation
  • Statutory organisations

How to apply

  1. Read the Shropshire Grassroots Grant guidance notes and check which level (start-up or established) applies; email vcsteam@community-resource.org.uk with questions
  2. Complete the online application form (progress can be saved and resumed): organisation details, the project, its need and beneficiaries, three years' income, reserves, a full-cost budget and other funding
  3. Upload the supporting documents and a signed declaration from the chair or secretary and a committee member
  4. Submit by midnight on Wednesday 25 November 2026; a grant panel decides

Outcomes will be shared with applicants by Wednesday 23 December 2026.

Have ready

  • Most recent annual accounts
  • Bank statement no more than 3 months old
  • Governing document
  • Quotes and actual costs of the project (if required)
  • Signed declaration from the chair or secretary and a committee member

The form also asks whether you have a safeguarding policy and DBS checks if working with children or vulnerable people; signatures can be sent separately if you cannot upload them, but the application will not progress until they arrive.
