The Sir James Reckitt Charity

The Sir James Reckitt Charity Grants

Grants generally between £1,000 and £10,000, usually unrestricted, for charities associated with Hull and East Yorkshire or with the Society of Friends (Quakers) - either route qualifies, so a Quaker charity anywhere in the UK can apply. Founded in 1921, the charity now distributes over £1m a year. Trustees meet twice a year, in May and November, so a decision can take six months, but urgent appeals of up to £2,000 can be approved within a few weeks.

Who can apply

  • Registered charities and organisations that are either associated with Hull and East Yorkshire, or associated with the Society of Friends (Quakers) - the two routes are alternatives, so a Quaker-associated charity anywhere in the UK is eligible
  • The application asks whether the organisation is a registered charity, whether it is associated with the Society of Friends, whether it is based in Hull or East Yorkshire, and whether it has applied within the last two years, even unsuccessfully
  • A two-year rule applies to repeat appeals except in emergencies
  • Local agencies seeking hardship funding for an individual or family in need apply separately, through the Grant Giving Consortium form

What it funds

  • Unrestricted grants for charities to spend at their discretion, which the charity describes as its usual approach
  • Start-up costs and core costs
  • Purchase of equipment and materials
  • Building improvements
  • Training costs
  • Project development costs
  • The charity also supports a set of core charities with annual funding based on a long-term relationship

What it will not fund

  • Further appeals within two years of a previous application, whether it succeeded or not, except in emergencies
  • Organisations with no association with Hull and East Yorkshire or the Society of Friends

individuals can be funded, but only for amounts under £1,000 and only for travel or research projects, via the Contact Us form rather than the charity application route

How to apply

  1. Check you fit one of the two routes: association with Hull and East Yorkshire, or with the Society of Friends
  2. Go to the Apply page and start the online application - the charity says it takes about 30 minutes
  3. Answer what the funding is for, the total project cost, how much you are asking the charity to contribute, how soon funds would be spent, and whether other donors can match the funding
  4. Submit at least a month before a trustees' meeting in May or November

for an urgent appeal, say so - smaller amounts up to £2,000 can be approved within a few weeks outside the meeting cycle
