St Giles & St George

Alms Grants for Organisations

Grants from the St Giles & St George Alms charity for not-for-profit organisations relieving poverty among people living in its small area of benefit (the parishes of St Giles-in-the-Fields, St George's Bloomsbury and St Paul's Covent Garden, in Camden and Westminster). The Trustees focus on three priorities: isolated older people, homeless people (including those at risk and formerly homeless) and access to independent advice. Project Funding gives up to £8,000 a year for up to three years; Block Grants (usually up to £5,000) fund an organisation to meet its beneficiaries' individual needs. Unsolicited applications are not accepted: organisations must first contact the Clerk to discuss their project and are then invited to apply online.

Who can apply

  • Not-for-profit organisations (including charities, churches and social enterprises) delivering activities that address the three priorities - isolated older people, homeless people (including at-risk and formerly homeless) and access to independent advice - for people living in the Alms charity's area of benefit: the parishes of St Giles-in-the-Fields, St George's Bloomsbury and St Paul's Covent Garden
  • The parish boundaries do not match local authority boundaries but cover most of the Bloomsbury and Holborn & Covent Garden wards in Camden plus small parts of the St James's and West End wards in Westminster
  • Large national charities and organisations with significant unrestricted reserves are not funded
  • Multi-year Project Funding is only for organisations recently funded by the charity or with a track record of providing the service in the area
  • Organisations can hold only one grant from the charity at a time

What it funds

  • Project Funding: the costs of an organisation providing services to people in the charity's target groups and area of benefit, up to £8,000 per annum for up to three years. The charity will contribute towards management and overheads and will fund existing services that are losing funding or need match funding as well as new initiatives. Multi-year funding is only for local organisations that have recently received funding from the charity, or for existing projects with a track record and reputation of providing the service in the area of benefit.
  • Block Grants: funds used to meet the needs of an organisation's beneficiaries on an individual basis, usually up to £5,000, as a long-term partnership with an initial grant for 12-18 months that can be renewed by email or written request when funds run low

All work must support isolated older people, homeless people (including those at risk and formerly homeless) or access to independent advice, for people living in the area of benefit.

Projects for children and young people should apply to the separate Education Grants instead.

What it will not fund

  • Large national charities
  • Statutory obligations
  • Work that has already taken place (or been paid for) before the application was approved
  • Funding for organisations to build their financial reserves
  • Organisations with significant unrestricted reserves
  • Organisations already holding a grant from the charity (only one grant at a time)
  • Projects supporting children and young people (these go to the Education Grants)

How to apply

  1. Read the Organisational Grants Policy & Guidelines (October 2025)
  2. Contact the Clerk to the Trustees for a discussion about your project, using the contact form on the website (subject 'Alms: Grants to Organisations') or by phone on 07960 691436
  3. If invited to apply, complete the online application form the charity sends you a link to
  4. Submit by the quarterly deadline (shared with the Education Grants, about 5-6 weeks before each Trustee meeting); the next published deadline is 7pm on Monday 14 December 2026
  5. The application is assessed and considered at a quarterly Trustee meeting; any award is confirmed in writing and is subject to the charity's grant terms and conditions
  6. Report back: Project Funding grantees submit an annual or final report; Block Grant holders keep the charity's beneficiary spreadsheet and send a short quarterly update

The charity does NOT accept unsolicited applications - you must be invited to apply after speaking to the Clerk.

There is no limit on reapplying after a grant ends or after an unsuccessful application.

One-off applications may be considered more quickly if there is particular time pressure.
