Stevenage Arts Guild
Stevenage Arts Guild Grants
Four small funding streams for amateur arts organisations that belong to the Stevenage Arts Guild, for activities inside the Borough of Stevenage that are open to all residents. The usual stream is a guarantee against loss on an event — normally up to £500, or £750 for events at the Gordon Craig Theatre — which is only claimed if the event loses money. The others are advance funding to get an event off the ground, special funding towards major capital items such as a musical instrument or PA system, and retrospective emergency funding where an unforeseen loss threatens the organisation's survival.

- Light
- short form, little evidence needed
Who can apply
- Any member organisation of the Stevenage Arts Guild
- Guild membership is open to societies and groups that meet within the Borough of Stevenage, and to individuals living in Stevenage furthering their own creative endeavours, for a small annual subscription — so a group that is not yet a member would need to join first, via the Guild secretary
- The application form adds that funding is only available to Stevenage organisations which are properly constituted and whose activities benefit residents within Stevenage Borough, and the grants page requires that the activity be open to all residents
- Applications for streams A and B must be made at least two months before the event, and for stream B may be made as far in advance as necessary
What it funds
- Stream A, a guarantee against loss for an event taking place within the Borough of Stevenage, normally limited to £500 per event or £750 for events held in the Gordon Craig Theatre, with arguments for an increase considered in unusual circumstances
- Stream B, advance funding paid on a date the organisation nominates so that money is in hand when an event needs paying for
- Stream C, special funding towards major capital expenditure where the organisation's own resources are insufficient — the Guild's own examples are the purchase of a musical instrument or a PA system — and this may be structured as an interest-free loan repayable over an agreed period
- Stream D, emergency funding given in retrospect where unforeseen losses jeopardise the future operation of the organisation
What it will not fund
- Activities taking place outside the Borough of Stevenage
- Events not open to all residents of the borough
- Performance clothing, and other expenditure benefiting individual members rather than the organisation as a whole
for special funding the organisation is expected to contribute from its own funds, and the Guild may offer an interest-free loan rather than a grant
for emergency funding the organisation's committee must meet Guild officers and agree a plan to prevent a recurrence
How to apply
- Join the Stevenage Arts Guild if your group is not already a member — membership forms come from the Guild secretary by email
- Read the descriptions of the four funding streams on the grants page and on the back of the application form
- Download the funding application form as a Word document or PDF from the grants page
- Complete the form, stating which of the four streams you are applying for and giving the date and place of the event where relevant
- Return the completed form to the Secretary at the address shown on the form
for a guarantee against loss and for advance funding, apply at least two months before the event
organisations are notified only if their application is rejected
after an event funded by a guarantee against loss, submit the separate claim form within 90 days
Have ready
- A breakdown of expenditure with an overall total
- Income sources including ticket prices and an estimate of ticket sales where relevant, and for special funding the contribution from the society's own funds
- Your most recent approved annual accounts, if this is your first application to the Guild in the current financial year (1 April to 31 March)
an existing budget prepared for your own purposes may be attached instead of completing the financial section, as long as it shows all main items of income and expenditure
a separate claim form is required after the event for a guarantee against loss
