Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust
Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust Grants for Organisations
A nearly 500-year-old endowed trust making capital and revenue grants to not-for-profit organisations benefiting residents of the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield — defined precisely as the Birmingham City Council wards making up the Sutton Coldfield constituency. Applications are accepted at any time but must reach the Trust at least six weeks before one of the roughly eight Grants Committee meetings a year; the next submission deadline is 14 October 2026. Requests over £55,000 go to the full Board of Trustees. The Trust also runs separate schemes for individuals in need, for school clothing vouchers, and almshouse accommodation.

Who can apply
- Organisational applicants must be not-for-profit: registered charities, charitable incorporated organisations, constituted clubs, companies limited by guarantee, local government or educational establishments previously funded by the LEA, or a small organisation with a community bank account — and preference is usually given in that order
- The benefit must go to residents or not-for-profit organisations located within the Trust's area of benefit, defined as the council wards of Birmingham City Council known as the Sutton Coldfield constituency; a boundary map is published
- Organisations based outside Sutton Coldfield may exceptionally apply where they meet the needs of a significant number of residents and there is no similar local provision
- Applicants must say what percentage of their members, users or beneficiaries are Sutton Coldfield residents, with a full explanation where not all are
- The Trust will not support organisations proactively excluding beneficiaries on the basis of Equality Act protected characteristics
- Schools apply on a three-year cycle based on the level and frequency of previous awards, with the amount guided by the number of pupils on roll — contact the grants team to find out which year you are eligible
What it funds
Both capital and revenue projects for organisations whose work benefits Sutton Coldfield residents, across the Trust's categories:
- Relief of need by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage
- Education, through grants to schools, colleges and libraries
- Arts, culture, heritage or science
- Religion, through conservation of built heritage and religious community work
- Health, through organisations providing support and medical care
- Citizenship and community development, where frequent awards have gone to youth organisations for camping equipment, minibuses, musical instruments and renovation of club premises
- Amateur sport
- Environmental protection, through allotments, parks and nature reserves within Sutton Coldfield's boundaries
There is also a Festive and Cultural Celebration Grant with its own guidance.
What it will not fund
- Projects that do not benefit residents or not-for-profit organisations within the Sutton Coldfield constituency wards of Birmingham City Council
- Retrospective grants, and projects that have already started
- Projects specifically aligned to any political party
- Projects that specifically support the promotion of any religion
- Projects where potential beneficiaries may be excluded on the basis of an Equality Act protected characteristic
organisations based outside Sutton Coldfield may exceptionally be considered where they meet the needs of a significant number of residents and there is no similar local provision — medical, hospice and special needs provision are the examples given
usually three years must have elapsed since a previous capital grant, and current grant holders may not be eligible until their grant period ends
How to apply
- Contact the Grants Team before applying and discuss your project proposal — the Trust requires this for all projects and does pre-application due diligence
- Read the Funding Exclusions, the Organisational Grants Application Guidance and Questions document, and the Grants Terms and Conditions
- Complete the Trust's online eligibility checker, which then gives access to the application portal
- Complete the online application form, which can be saved and resumed within 30 days
- Submit the application and all required documentation at least six weeks before the Grants Committee meeting you are aiming for — the next submission deadline is 14 October 2026 for the 25 November 2026 meeting
requests of £55,000 or less are decided by the Grants Committee; for more than £55,000 a brief project outline goes to the Committee first, and the Board of Trustees, which meets quarterly, makes the decision
Sport and Religion category grants are only considered twice a year, in April and October
when the number of applications is high, some are deferred to a later meeting
