Al Tajir Trust

Al Tajir Trust Grants and Partnerships

Grants and partnerships with institutions advancing science, education, religious understanding and research in Britain or in Arab or other Islamic states. In practice the Trust funds exhibitions, electronic media and publications making Islamic culture and history better known in the UK and Middle East; educational assistance and health care for deprived communities in the Levant; and conservation of Islamic artefacts and manuscripts. Past recipients include the British Museum, the Ashmolean, the V&A and Chatham House. No grants to individuals, and the scholarship programme for students from the Arab world is suspended. Trustees meet in March, July and November.

Who can apply

  • Existing and other potential partner institutions pursuing the Trust's aims
  • The Trust does not make grants to individuals
  • Grants approved by trustees are normally made in pounds sterling by transfer to a UK bank account
  • The Trust requires feedback on the activity funded and public acknowledgement of its support
  • The application form asks for the year the organisation started, whether it has a formal constitution, its aims, objectives and activities, total annual income and expenditure from its most recent accounts, and the restricted and unrestricted reserves it holds

What it funds

Grants and partnerships with institutions to advance science, education, religious understanding and research in Britain or any of the Arab or other Islamic states. The Trust's recent programme has:

  • Funded exhibitions, electronic media, publications and other activities making aspects of Islamic culture and history better known to a wider audience in the United Kingdom and the Middle East
  • Supported charitable institutions providing educational assistance and health care to deprived communities in the Levant
  • Contributed to the cost of conserving Islamic artefacts and manuscripts in the United Kingdom and assisting such conservation elsewhere

Past grants have included museum exhibitions, a Muslim-Christian summer school, archaeological training for young Jordanian archaeologists, online programmes helping young refugees in Jordan and Lebanon reach university, and long-term support for a research library in East Jerusalem.

What it will not fund

  • Applications from individuals — the Trust does not make grants to individuals
  • The scholarship programme for students from the Arab world taking one-year taught masters degrees at British universities, which the Trust has suspended

applications are judged against the Trust's current aims and priorities and the availability of funds, so a proposal outside the three recent programme strands is unlikely to succeed

How to apply

  1. Read the Grants and Partnerships page and the Trust's Annual Report and Accounts on the Charity Commission website to check your proposal matches its priorities
  2. Download the Al Tajir Trust grant application form from the Grants and Partnerships page
  3. Complete every relevant part, including a 25-word summary of the purpose and an explanation of how it matches the Trust's grant-making aims
  4. Print the form and have an appropriate officer of the organisation sign the declaration
  5. Send the signed form and any supplementary information as email attachments to the address shown on the form

applications can be made at any time and are acknowledged with an indication of the time frame for a decision

they are then considered at the next trustees' meeting, usually held in March, July and November; urgent applications can exceptionally be given early attention

Have ready

  • The completed and signed application form
  • A copy of your latest annual report and accounts
  • UK bank account details for payment by transfer — account name, number, sort code and the reference to show on the transfer

the form asks for total project cost, how much has been raised so far, and what other funding applications have been made
