The Lady Hind Trust

The Lady Hind Trust Grants

A general charitable trust, established in 1951, giving to UK registered charities and CICs based or specifically working in England. The trustees' discretion is wide but in practice they have historically supported work in or benefiting the people of Nottinghamshire or Norfolk, across community healthcare, health education, lifelong learning, community development, social services, crime prevention, the environment, church heritage and the arts. Trustees meet three times a year with fixed application deadlines. The Trust is administered in unison with The Charles Littlewood Hill Charitable Trust, and you may apply to only one of them.

Who can apply

  • UK registered charities, or Community Interest Companies that can provide evidence of their charitable purpose, which are based in or specifically working in England
  • The Trust will not consider any new application for donations from individuals
  • As a matter of practice rather than a stated rule, the trustees' historic priority has been charitable projects and activities in or benefiting the people of Nottinghamshire or Norfolk — a bias the Trust explains by its Nottingham origins and by the Norfolk trust set up by Lady Hind's nephew
  • The Lady Hind Trust and The Charles Littlewood Hill Charitable Trust are connected, share trustees and are administered in unison, and applicants are asked to apply to only one of them

What it funds

The trustees' discretion is wide, but as a matter of practice they have historically sought to support:

  • Charitable projects and activities in or benefiting the people of Nottinghamshire or Norfolk
  • Community healthcare services including home care, after care, sufferers of long term medical conditions and the continuing care of disabled people
  • Health education and prevention, promoting knowledge and awareness of specific diseases or conditions and supporting projects advancing health research
  • Lifelong learning projects helping people of any age achieve their educational potential, through supplementary schools, literacy and numeracy projects, community education, vocational or restart education for the unemployed and alternative education for excluded pupils
  • Community development helping groups organise and respond to needs in their communities
  • Personal social services for individuals or families overcoming social deprivation, such as people who are homeless or disabled and their carers, single parent, childcare and family support groups
  • Social preventive schemes covering crime prevention, preventing people dropping out, social care outreach and health and safety awareness
  • Community social activities promoting social engagement for vulnerable people and mitigating isolation and loneliness
  • Environmental efforts to protect nature, combat climate change and promote sustainable practices
  • Church heritage, including keeping church buildings open and in use
  • Activities supporting artists, promoting arts education and promoting access to the arts for all

What it will not fund

  • Applications from individuals — the Trust will not consider any new application for donations from individuals
  • Organisations that are not UK registered charities or Community Interest Companies able to evidence their charitable purpose
  • Organisations that are neither based in nor specifically working in England

do not apply to The Charles Littlewood Hill Charitable Trust as well. The two are connected, share trustees and are administered in unison, and the Trust asks you to apply to one only

How to apply

  1. Read the Trust's Grant Policy page and check your project fits one of the areas the trustees have historically supported
  2. Download the Application Summary document and the Application Form, both linked from the 'How to apply' page; the form comes in Word and PDF
  3. Complete both, clearly identifying the applicant organisation and its status as a registered charity, or other evidence of charitable purpose
  4. Explain the project or activity, how it meets the Trust's Grant Policy, who will benefit and why that benefit is sustainable
  5. Identify the likely costs, the overall cost of the project, what you have already raised, what is left to raise and what you are asking the Trust for, and say what other finance is sought or available so the trustees can see if and when the project will go ahead
  6. Say whether the project will be managed by paid staff, volunteers or both, and how many people are involved
  7. Email everything to ladyhindtrust@outlook.com, or post it to The Lady Hind Trust, PO Box 11467, Nottingham NG9 9NL
