The Macaulay Moat Foundation
The Macaulay Moat Foundation Rolling Grants Programme
Grants of up to GBP 5,000 a year, for one or two years, to small organisations in England and Wales with an annual turnover under GBP 100,000. Two priority areas only: autism support, restricted to organisations whose sole focus is supporting autistic people, and church outreach, meaning churches and Christian charities delivering projects to meet a social need. Applications are taken all year round and assessed three times a year, starting with a short online stage-one form; stage two asks for a five-minute video shown to the trustees.

Who can apply
- Charities including CIOs registered in any part of England and Wales, exempt charities as defined in schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011, Community Interest Companies and companies limited by guarantee, constituted groups with a management committee and a bank account, Christian churches, and social entrepreneurs
- Annual turnover must be GBP 100,000 or less, and an organisation holding more than 12 months' operating costs in reserves is not eligible
- The work must fit one of two priority areas: autism support, which is open only to organisations whose sole focus is supporting autistic people — an organisation doing autism support as part of a wider programme is explicitly excluded — or church outreach, meaning churches and Christian charities delivering projects to meet a social need in their community
- Individuals, charities registered outside England and Wales, political parties, animal charities and companies limited by shares cannot apply
- New organisations are welcome: the Foundation does not require a first set of published accounts, but does expect a clear budget and fundraising strategy
- If you are unsuccessful at stage two, the Foundation suggests you do not reapply unless it approaches you
What it funds
- The Foundation is deliberately flexible about the type of funding: trustees will consider contributions towards core costs, salaries and capital items as well as specific projects, and want applicants to be honest about what their organisation really needs
- Applications must be for charitable purposes and fall in one of two priority focus areas:
- Autism support
- Church outreach
Multi-year awards of up to two years are welcomed; grants are usually single payments, with multi-year awards paid annually after a brief progress report.
Successful applicants may also be offered an optional package of mentoring and fundraising expertise from the Foundation's partner Futurekraft.
What it will not fund
- Grants for buildings — repairs, renovations and extensions. This is stated as the only exclusion on what the money can be spent on
- Individuals
- Charities registered outside England and Wales
- Organisations with an annual turnover of more than GBP 100,000
- Political parties
- Animal charities
- Companies limited by shares
- Organisations with over 12 months' operating costs in reserves
- Organisations applying under the Autism priority which only provide autism support as a smaller part of a wider programme of work
How to apply
- Check your organisation meets the criteria on the Grant Making Policy page, especially the GBP 100,000 turnover ceiling and the reserves limit
- Submit the Stage One application on the Foundation's 'Apply' page — a short online form asking for contact details, legal structure and numbers, date established, number of trustees or directors, annual turnover, the funding request, the number of people who will benefit over a year, whether you have an up-to-date safeguarding policy, the type of grant (project, core or capital), how many years of funding you need, your priority area, and summaries of the organisation and the funding request in up to 300 words each
- If the Foundation is interested, it will invite you to stage two and ask for a two-page proposal and a five-minute video that is presented to the trustees at the decision-making panel
applications are taken all year round and assessed three times a year
if you are unsuccessful at stage two, do not reapply unless the Foundation approaches you
Have ready
- A two-page proposal covering a summary of the project (or of the whole organisation's activities if applying for core costs), evidence of need, any impact made to date, the difference you want to make to the community you serve, the difference this funding will make to your organisation, and a fundraising plan
- A five-minute video, shown to the trustees at the decision-making panel
- A budget for the work, including secured and anticipated income — a whole-organisation budget if applying for core costs, and estimated income and expenditure across the term if applying for multi-year funding
- A copy of a recent bank statement
- Annual accounts, if you produce them and they are not on the Charity Commission website
- Current management accounts showing income and expenditure to date, if you are a new organisation that has not completed a full financial year
- Quotes, if you are applying for capital items over GBP 1,000
- A copy of your constitution, if you are not registered with the Charity Commission or Companies House
these are the stage-two requirements. Stage one is an online form only, with no attachments
