The Roselands Trust

The Roselands Trust Grants

An independent grant-making charity based in South Lakeland, supporting organisations and individuals throughout Cumbria and North Lancashire. Awards go to community projects and charitable groups helping people facing disadvantage, particularly those supporting older adults or people with learning difficulties or disabilities. Its motto is 'supporting the little things that make a difference', and past grants run from a cards table for elderly residents and a replacement defibrillator to multi-year commitments. Trustees review applications monthly and there are separate forms for registered charities, non-registered groups and individuals.

Who can apply

  • Organisations and individuals throughout Cumbria and North Lancashire
  • There are three separate application forms — one for registered charities, one for non-registered charities and small community projects, and one for individuals — so unregistered community groups are explicitly catered for
  • The registered-charity form asks for the number of trustees, paid staff and volunteers; the non-registered form asks only for paid staff and volunteers
  • No income limit, minimum grant or maximum grant is published
  • Applicants are encouraged to contact the Trust for an informal discussion before submitting a formal application, and trustees may wish to visit an organisation to evaluate its project

What it funds

Community projects and charitable groups helping people facing disadvantage, particularly those supporting older adults or people with learning difficulties or disabilities. The Trust's published list of 2025 grants shows the range in practice:

  • Equipment such as climbing harnesses for disabled children's activity breaks and a replacement defibrillator with future pads and batteries
  • Salary costs for an activity coach plus sports equipment
  • E-learning volunteer training for an addictions charity
  • Respite breaks for families of neurodivergent children
  • Match funding towards maintenance equipment for a bowling green
  • Community events
  • Multi-year commitments, including a two-year grant on ageing well and a three-year commitment to a farmers' support organisation

The Trust also funds through a dedicated fund administered on its behalf by Cumbria Community Foundation, and supports the annual Winter Warmth Appeal.

How to apply

  1. Contact the Trust for an informal discussion first, to check the project meets its objectives — the Trust encourages this before any formal application
  2. Choose the right form for your status: registered charity, non-registered charity, or individual
  3. Download the form as a Word document or PDF from the 'How to Apply' page, or complete the equivalent form online; paper versions can be requested by phone, email or post
  4. Complete it with your organisation's aims and objectives including user groups and geographical area of support, numbers of trustees, paid staff and volunteers, how many beneficiaries the project will support, the sum requested, and details of the project — why it is needed, who benefits and how
  5. Give the total cost of the project with a breakdown, any money raised so far, and contributions from your own organisation or other charities
  6. Give a timescale for the project, and details of grants received from charities over the last three years
  7. Submit it by email to enquiries@theroselandstrust.org or by post to The Roselands Trust, PO Box 118, Windermere, Cumbria LA23 9AY

trustees may wish to visit your organisation to evaluate your project

successful applicants complete an evaluation form on completion of the project, and photographs are appreciated

Have ready

  • The latest financial statement of accounts of your organisation, or a spending plan if you are a new group
  • Bank statements for all accounts of the organisation
  • A quotation for the project
  • A safeguarding policy, if you work with vulnerable adults
  • A child protection policy, if you work with under-18s

nothing is required with the initial application. If the Trust considers your application compatible with its aims it will then request the following

for non-registered groups and small community projects, only the quotation and the two policies are listed, and the Trust says it 'may' request them
