The Tom Amos Charity
Tom Amos Charity Grants
A small Essex charity funding individuals and organisations for recreational facilities, education, relief of poverty, advancement of religion and other charitable objects benefiting the community. Its area is fixed by a Supplemental Trust Deed to the Borough of Chelmsford and the districts of Uttlesford and Braintree. Trustees meet quarterly with hard cut-off dates of 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. The assessment criteria are unusually explicit — and an application that does not answer every one of them, or is not submitted as a PDF, will be rejected outright.

Who can apply
- Individuals and organisations alike — the guidance and form both refer throughout to 'the individual/organisation', and the form asks for the name of the applicant and, separately, the name of the organisation and its Charity Commission number if applicable
- The benefit must fall within the Borough of Chelmsford or the Districts of Uttlesford or Braintree in Essex
- The trustees reserve the right to ask for an interview with applicants where an application is complex, and will require character references from applicants who are not known to the trustees
- The assessment is explicitly financial as well as charitable: the first criterion is whether the applicant's financial health is such that without the grant the stated benefits cannot be realised, and annual accounts and the last three bank statements are required as evidence of that position
What it funds
The objects of the charity:
- The provision of recreational facilities in Little Waltham and elsewhere
- The advancement of education
- The relief of poverty
- The advancement of religion
- Other charitable objects that are beneficial to the community
Where 'Little Waltham and elsewhere' is defined by a Supplemental Trust Deed as the area comprising the Borough of Chelmsford and the Districts of Uttlesford and Braintree in the County of Essex.
The application asks for the purpose of the donation to be specific, describing the need, the benefits and both setup and ongoing costs.
What it will not fund
- Applications that do not meet the objects of the charity
- Applications where the submission does not fully comply with the stated criteria — a response must be made to every criterion
- Applications not submitted as a PDF
the charity states these will be rejected, and that trustees' decisions are final with no appeals or feedback
How to apply
- Read the guidance notes for grant applications, which set out the criteria the trustees will use
- Download the Grant Application Form from the Grants section of the website
- Answer every one of the criteria — a response must be made to all of them, and excessive detail in the project description may reduce your chances
- Convert the completed form to PDF; the charity suggests a free PDF writer and will reject anything not submitted as a PDF
- Email it to enquiries@tomamoscharity.org before the relevant cut-off date — 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October
the trustees may ask for an interview to consider complex applications
decisions are final and no correspondence, appeals or feedback will be entered into
Have ready
- Annual accounts — audited accounts where the applicant has them
- Copies of the last three bank statements, as an indication of the applicant's financial position
- Character references, from applicants who are not known to the trustees
- A breakdown of total project costs, covering setup and ongoing costs, what you have raised and where the rest will come from
- Details of any contribution you, your organisation or others may be receiving, including outstanding grant applications elsewhere
everything must be supplied as a PDF, including the bank statements
