The Tottenham Grammar School Foundation

Somerset Grants for Voluntary Organisations

Grants for voluntary organisations, charities and other not-for-profit groups working with young people under 25 who are resident in the London Borough of Haringey, or who attended a school there. The Foundation particularly welcomes applications from smaller local organisations without professional fundraising support. Applications are made on an Excel workbook and considered only at Awards Committee meetings, roughly every 8-10 weeks, with a cut-off 11 days beforehand. Grants are never made retrospectively. The Foundation also runs Somerset Awards for individuals and Somerset Grants for Haringey schools.

Who can apply

  • Voluntary organisations, charities and other not-for-profit groups that work with young people resident in the London Borough of Haringey
  • The pro forma asks whether the organisation is a registered charity, a Community Interest Company or a Community Amateur Sports Club, and if none of these, to explain the structure used and whether registration is planned — so unregistered constituted groups are catered for
  • The beneficiaries must be under 25 and either live in Haringey or have attended a school there; the application asks for the estimated proportion of beneficiaries who are Haringey residents and who are under 25
  • The Foundation particularly welcomes applications from smaller, local organisations and charities that do not have access to professional fundraising support or national or regional funding teams
  • It prefers not to be the sole funder of a project, and asks organisations submitting several applications in one academic year to prioritise their strongest bids, since trustees may take the number and relative priority into account
  • Where a grant buys something that could be regarded as a capital asset, a charity or educational institution recipient should also be based or active in Haringey

What it funds

  • Specific events, projects or purchases that promote the education — including social and physical training — of people under 25 who, or whose parents, are resident in the London Borough of Haringey, or who have at any time attended a school in the borough

The Foundation deliberately adopts no 'current priorities' and says it tries to encourage creativity in the applications it receives, so its guidance is framed almost entirely as restrictions.

Trustees give particular consideration to applications demonstrating clear educational value, and ask for at least two intended objectives that can be used to monitor outcomes.

What it will not fund

  • The employment of staff, or payment to individuals for the provision of services
  • The construction, adaptation, repair and maintenance of school buildings
  • The repair and maintenance of school equipment
  • The direct delivery of the National Curriculum
  • The purchase of vehicles
  • Young people who do not live in the Borough of Haringey, unless they attend or attended a school in Haringey
  • The training of staff
  • Resources exclusively for parents
  • The cost of adults attending trips
  • Any grants for people aged 25 years or over
  • Retrospective funding — the application must reach an Awards meeting before the project, trip or event takes place

the first five exclusions follow from Clause 32 of the Foundation's Scheme, which bars applying income directly in relief of rates, taxes or other public funds

the trustees will not consider the same or a substantially similar project twice in one academic year, 1 September to 31 August

How to apply

  1. Download the latest VO Somerset Grant Application Pack from the Foundation's website — trustees require the current version of the form
  2. Read the Guidance Notes and the Advice Sheet inside the workbook before you start
  3. Check the Awards Committee meeting dates on the website, and work back 11 days to your submission deadline
  4. Complete the Application Form worksheet in Microsoft Excel, observing the word limits — text that is not visible in a box will not be seen by the trustees
  5. Complete the Pro Forma worksheet too, unless one has been submitted to the Foundation within the last 12 months and is still up to date
  6. Email the completed workbook as an .xlsx attachment to office@tgsf.org.uk, or grantsform@tgsf.org.uk

the form must be completed in Microsoft Excel. Google Sheets or other software deactivates its controls and the Foundation will not be able to process it, and it must not be converted to PDF, CSV or any other format, or printed and scanned

the Foundation does not fund retrospectively, so the application must reach an Awards meeting before your project, trip or event takes place

the 2026-27 Awards Committee meetings are 29 September 2026, 10 November 2026, 26 January 2027, 27 April 2027 and 29 June 2027, with deadlines of 18 September, 30 October, 15 January, 16 April and 18 June respectively

Have ready

  • A completed Pro Forma for Organisations, unless one has been submitted within the previous 12 months and remains up to date — it asks for the organisation's bank details, registration status, date established, annual turnover and future plans
  • The most recent annual accounts; where only micro accounts are produced, management accounts or equivalent
  • Trust deed or constitution, for first-time applicants
  • Most recent annual report
  • Child protection or safeguarding policy
  • Equal opportunities policy
  • Diversity policy
  • Health and safety policy
  • Insurance policy
  • Suppliers' quotes or estimates where appropriate — more than one for large amounts, to demonstrate best value
  • Where coach hire is part of the application, details of costs and vehicle capacities to demonstrate best value

the pro forma lets you mark each policy as previously enclosed, available, or submitted with this application
