The Tudwick Foundation

The Tudwick Foundation Grants

Grants of typically GBP 300 to GBP 3,000 for small organisations and individuals benefiting people in Essex and Suffolk, founded in 2019 by members of the Bennett family. Core funding as well as project costs is offered, and the Foundation actively encourages applications from relatively new organisations to help them become established. Organisations should have an annual income below GBP 500,000. The application is a single Word form emailed to the grants administrator, with no deadlines — one of the lighter applications for a grant of this size.

Who can apply

  • Small organisations with an annual income below GBP 500,000, and individuals, where the proposal benefits people in Essex and/or Suffolk — the form states in capitals that applications can only be considered for proposals benefiting people in those two counties
  • Mainly voluntary organisations and community groups addressing unmet social needs, though applications with different objectives will be considered
  • Individuals seeking funds to support their local community are explicitly welcomed
  • New organisations are actively encouraged
  • Larger organisations with pioneering pilot projects may be considered in exceptional circumstances, but should contact the Foundation before applying
  • Charities registered outside the UK are excluded
  • Applicants need a bank or building society account held in the name of the applicant organisation or individual, and organisations must supply annual accounts, or projected budgets if new
  • Where financial help is given the trustees will satisfy themselves that satisfactory management exists to ensure the money is properly used and, for equipment, that it can be efficiently operated and maintained

What it funds

  • Core funding as well as project-based grants, for specific and well-defined projects directed to charitable purposes in the geographical regions of Essex and Suffolk
  • Funding is prioritised for community projects where the greatest number of people will benefit, mainly voluntary organisations and community groups addressing outstanding social needs, and for the advancement of education
  • The Foundation welcomes applications from individuals seeking funds to support their local community, and actively encourages applications from relatively new organisations to help them become established
  • Applications with different objectives will still be considered by the trustees
  • Regional projects for national charities will be considered

What it will not fund

  • General appeals, and anything that directly promotes religious or political agendas
  • Charities registered outside the UK
  • Retrospective funding — no form of retrospective funding can be considered
  • Direct replacement of statutory funding, or activities that are primarily the responsibility of local or central government

organisations with an annual income above GBP 500,000 are outside the usual range, though larger organisations with pioneering pilot projects may be considered in exceptional circumstances — contact the Foundation before applying

repeat funding requests can be submitted the year following a successful application, on receipt of satisfactory progress reports

How to apply

  1. Download the grant application form and privacy notice from the Grant Applications page
  2. Complete it with your contact details, the organisation's name and registration number if it has one, and whether a bank account is held in that name
  3. Give background on the organisation — or, if applying as an individual, describe how you are helping others
  4. Set out the specific purpose of the grant, how many people will benefit, whether they pay fees or charges, and how you will reach them
  5. State your aims and objectives for the award, your methods, benefits and successes seen so far, and how the results of the funding will be identified
  6. Give the amount requested, a breakdown of total project costs, and where the rest of the money will come from; organisations also state annual income and reserves, explaining why reserves are held
  7. Say whether you are happy to take part in publicity, sign the declaration, and email the form to Sue Hawes at tudwickfoundation@gmail.com

the Foundation confirms receipt and tells you the date your application goes to the trustees

the grant co-ordinator is happy to discuss a potential application beforehand, and may arrange to visit or speak with potential recipients before or after a grant

Have ready

  • A copy of your latest annual accounts, together with any relevant literature — organisations only
  • A copy of your projected budgets for the current year, if you are a new organisation

evidence of expenditure may be required after a grant is approved, and successful applicants complete a simple progress report so the Foundation can share the story
