Hornsea 3 Skills Fund

Grants of £10,000 to £80,000 for experienced organisations, including third sector groups and consultancies, to develop and deliver extra-curricular STEM training, education courses, one-off events or programmes of targeted events. The fund is part of the Hornsea 3 Community Fund (from Ørsted's Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm) and is administered by GrantScape. Projects must be delivered in the Skills Fund benefit area: Norfolk north of a line from near Wisbech to Kessingland, which also takes in the Lowestoft corner of Suffolk. This area differs from the main Hornsea 3 Community Fund zone. Up to £80,000 is set aside each year, so a full-size award may use the whole year's allocation.

Who can apply

  • Experienced organisations of all types that can develop and deliver STEM education projects, including third sector organisations and experienced consultancies
  • The organisation must have a bank or building society account in its own name and a written constitution, set of rules or governing document
  • Local authorities, town or parish councils and schools do not need to upload a constitution, but PTAs and 'Friends of' groups do
  • The project must be delivered within the Skills Fund benefit area mapped on the fund page, between the North Norfolk coastline and the blue line
  • Previous applicants are welcome to reapply
  • Organisations can submit only one application to this fund, but may apply to other Ørsted Skills Funds at the same time

What it funds

STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) educational projects delivered in the Skills Fund benefit area to improve people's skills and employment opportunities, including:

  • Training and/or educational courses
  • A one-off event
  • A programme of targeted events
  • The fund supports two kinds of project
  • First, the support, enhancement and expansion of existing projects or networks already delivering local STEM benefits, such as STEM festivals, engagement days and pop-up events
  • Second, new and innovative initiatives for one or more age ranges from early years, primary, secondary, further or higher education, such as wind turbine kits for school science classes, other resource packs, or other extra-curricular activities

Projects can last up to two years.

What it will not fund

  • Projects delivered outside the Hornsea 3 Skills Fund benefit area
  • Organisations with current live STEM grants from this fund (grants with outstanding finance at the April deadline)
  • Work started before a formal grant contract is in place
  • Late applications

How to apply

  1. Check the benefit area map on the fund page, and call GrantScape on 01908 247630 to confirm your project location is eligible before applying
  2. Download the Application Form Questions & Guidance document from the application page and plan your answers
  3. Register on GrantScape's online application system (grantscape.smartsimpleuk.com) and complete the online application form, using 'Save Draft' as you go
  4. Tick the Declaration and GDPR statement, save again, then press Submit before midnight on 24 March 2027. You will receive an automatic acknowledgement with a PDF of your form.

The closing date is different from the main Hornsea 3 Community Fund, and late submissions will not be considered.

If you are successful, you will need 3 comparable quotes for capital or contractor items over £5,000 (2 for items over £1,000), and work must not start before a formal grant contract is in place.

Groups unable to apply online because of communication needs can contact GrantScape for alternative arrangements.

Have ready

  • Signed copy of your current constitution, set of rules or governing document

This is the only upload accepted with the application, and anything else will not be viewed. Local authorities, town or parish councils and schools are exempt (PTAs and 'Friends of' groups are not), and churches can provide a mission statement. Quotes are requested only if a grant is awarded.
