The Rose Foundation
Rose Foundation Building Project Grants
Financial assistance for registered charities and exempt bodies undertaking building projects costing less than £200,000 in the London area. Donations are usually between £5,000 and £10,000. The trustees have extensive experience of projects of this size, visit each scheme at least twice, and expect to add advice as well as money in the design and construction phases. There is no form: an application is a letter, which makes this one of the lightest applications of its size anywhere.

Who can apply
- Registered charities and exempt bodies undertaking a building project in the London area
- The foundation funds London partly because of the settlors' connections but mostly for practical reasons: it assists up to sixty schemes at a time and each needs at least two site visits, some as many as four, from its Crawford Street office
- The project must commence in the first eight months of the funded year, or have started earlier and still be ongoing in that period
- The foundation generally prefers properties to be freehold or to have at least five years of a lease remaining
- It receives many more applications than it can fund and says requests that do not match its criteria are most unlikely to be assisted
What it funds
Building projects — anything involving the use of builders:
- A general refurbishment or a specific scheme
- A repair to a roof or windows
- The creation of disabled access or the provision of new toilets
- Adapting or creating a classroom or bedroom
- Extending a building or improving the landscaping
- Fulfilling Health and Safety requirements or fire protection
- Simply a redecoration
The whole scheme must cost less than £200,000, unless it is being progressed in genuinely independent phases over an extended period and the part needing funding meets the criteria on its own.
What it will not fund
- The purchase of equipment — unless it is an integral part of an overall scheme, which could be partly funded
- The purchase of a building or a site
- Seed money to draw up plans
- Fees generally
- Schemes already complete by the time of funding
- Funds that would be banked indefinitely rather than spent
How to apply
- Write an informal letter — there are no forms to fill out
- Give details of the applicant and the registered charity number
- State the nature and probable approximate cost of the scheme
- Give anticipated start and completion dates
- Say whether planning or building consents are in place
- State the nature of your tenure of the property — freehold, or the years remaining on the lease
- Address it to Martin Rose at 28 Crawford Street, London W1H 1LN, at any point between 1 July and 31 March
the foundation welcomes a preliminary phone call on 020 7262 1155 before a formal request
