Hull & East Riding Charitable Trust
Hull & East Riding Charitable Trust Grants
A local trust established in 1985 that funds charities and other deserving causes where the benefit goes directly to people living in Hull or the East Riding of Yorkshire. It awarded £435,000 in the past year across a wide spread of arts, disability, mental health, hospice, homelessness and heritage work. Trustees meet twice a year, in May and November, and publish no grant range — the only figure stated is up to £300 for an under-18 taking part in a UK or overseas project. Large community projects can be backed by a conditional pledge rather than a cash grant.

Who can apply
- Local charities or groups delivering work that will have a charitable direct benefit to residents of the Hull and East Riding area
- National charities are only considered where a project has a local focus, and applications from overseas organisations are not accepted
- Individuals cannot apply, with one exception: a young person under 18 taking part in a UK or overseas project with a leading organisation may receive up to £300
- Applicants are asked for their legal status and for a governing document — a constitution, memorandum and articles, or a set of rules in the case of a small group — so a group does not have to be a registered charity, but it does need to be constituted and hold a bank account in its own name
- Schools may apply, but not for teaching or buildings
What it funds
- Music and arts projects, especially those involving people from disadvantaged backgrounds
- Projects benefiting older people
- Projects that help with mental health
- Projects supporting people with physical and learning disabilities
- Hospices
- Homeless projects
- Projects supporting residents in marginalised groups in the area
- Heritage projects
- Support for children to attend school trips from schools in disadvantaged areas
- Contributions of up to £300 for a young person under 18 to take part in a UK or overseas project with a leading organisation
- Requests from notable buildings with a good level of community use
- Pre-school clubs, for equipment or activities
- Applications from schools other than for teaching and buildings — for example promoting healthy eating, playground equipment, or school trips that are educational rather than social
- Significant community projects demanding major funding, where support may be given by way of a pledge with payment conditional on all other funding sources being agreed
What it will not fund
- Projects that are for political, religious or educational purposes
- Projects that are not focused in Hull and East Yorkshire
- Applications from overseas
- Appeals from individuals, unless under 18 for visits with a leading organisation
- Medical research projects
- Animal charities, unless the project provides a direct human benefit
- National charities, unless a project has a local focus
- Core staff salaries, unless a proportion is included in the project budget and the request is only to fund part of the project
the trustees say that in exceptional circumstances they may consider other projects if a cause is of special merit, and invite a conversation with the administrator first
How to apply
- Read the guidance notes on the Apply page to check your project is one the trustees support
- If your project sits outside the published guidelines but you think it has special merit, contact Lynn Humphreys on Lynn.Humphreys@herct.org.uk to discuss it first
- Complete the online application form, which asks how much you are seeking, how many Hull and East Riding residents will benefit, what your organisation does and where it is based, what the project is and what you hope to achieve, how the outcomes will benefit local residents, and how the funds will be spent
- Attach the supporting documents and submit so the application reaches the trust by 20 April or 20 October
