Many funders run the same grant every year, so check the funder’s site for a new round. The details below are what the funder published when it was open.

Northampton Town Council

General Community Grants Scheme

Northampton Town Council's larger grant scheme for charities, community groups and not-for-profit organisations running projects that benefit a wide part of the town rather than one ward. Grants are generally above £2,000, and no group can receive more than £8,000 in a financial year across all the Council's grant schemes. The money comes from council tax, and everything on the form apart from the applicant's contact details is published in the committee agenda. Applications are considered several times a year against published deadlines.

Who can apply

  • Community groups based in the Northampton Town Council area: local charities, Community Interest Companies, not-for-profit limited companies, and unincorporated or newly formed community groups
  • New groups are welcome if suitable financial arrangements are in place
  • The group needs a bank account in its own name; if it has none, another organisation must agree in writing to hold and manage the funds, and the Council will not pay into personal or business accounts
  • The project must take place within the Town Council boundary and clearly benefit Northampton residents, and priority goes to groups mainly serving residents of that area (groups serving a wider area may be pointed to West Northamptonshire Council or another town or parish council)
  • Individuals, profit-making businesses, and regional or national charities (unless for a specific project directly benefiting Northampton residents) cannot apply
  • Schools can apply only for non-curriculum work with wider community benefit
  • Groups must hold suitable public liability insurance, and those working with children, young people or vulnerable adults need safeguarding arrangements

What it funds

Project activity that:

  • Improves the social, economic or environmental wellbeing of Northampton
  • Reduces inequalities and barriers to participation
  • Brings people together
  • Supports priorities set by the Council
  • Gives residents a voice in shaping their community

Projects should benefit a large part of the Town Council's area, not a single ward.

Time-limited, project-specific staffing costs (such as a sessional youth worker or a workshop facilitator) may be considered, as may short-term venue or room hire that is essential to a small community activity.

Schools may apply for work that sits outside the core curriculum and benefits the wider community.

What it will not fund

  • Individuals
  • Commercial businesses or companies operating for profit
  • Regional or national charities, unless the funding is for a specific project that directly benefits Northampton residents
  • Ongoing core running costs such as long-term rent, general utilities or routine overheads not linked to a specific project
  • Core staff salaries not directly linked to a specific funded project
  • Hospitality, alcohol or entertainment-only costs
  • Activities that promote a political party or candidate
  • Religious worship or primarily faith-based activities (community activities run by faith groups may be eligible)
  • Core school curriculum activities or statutory school provision
  • Retrospective funding for projects that have already taken place
  • Activities that duplicate existing provision without clear additional benefit
  • Projects benefiting a single ward (these should go to the Councillor's Community Fund)

a group can receive no more than £8,000 in total per financial year across all Town Council grant schemes

groups that receive separate Event Funding from the Council in the same financial year cannot also apply to the Community Grants schemes
