The James Tudor Foundation
Physical Health Programme
Flexible grants, usually for one year, for UK-registered health charities whose entire work falls into one of four categories: evidence-based physical therapies for people with neurodegenerative or neuromuscular conditions, physical disabilities or life-changing injuries; specialist single-condition charities giving information through nurse-led helplines and printed or digital materials; direct clinical healthcare for people experiencing homelessness, street sex workers or vulnerable migrants; and emergency air ambulances in South West England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Charities need an income under £20m and at least five years of audited or examined accounts. The Foundation will not consider applications where only part of a charity's work has been packaged to fit its priorities. The programme budget for 2026-27 is £540,000, spread over three rounds and 35-45 grants a year.

Who can apply
- UK registered charities delivering their services in the UK, with an annual income under £20m, registered with the relevant charity regulator for at least 5 years and with at least 5 years of audited or independently examined accounts downloadable from that regulator
- The charity must have a single focus: either a single-disease charity providing specific information and support, or a charity that directly provides healthcare (clinics, therapies, rehabilitation) to one of the groups listed under what is funded
- Charities with a broad client group are not supported, and all of the charity's services must fall within one eligible category
- Air ambulance charities must operate in South West England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland
- Volunteer-run charities are excluded
- A charity whose Expression of Interest or Full Application was declined cannot reapply until the same round the following year
- Current grant holders can apply for continuation, but a new grant would start only when the current one ends
- A charity funded in three consecutive years must wait 12 months after its last grant ends
- The Foundation asks charities that are not a close match not to apply
What it funds
Flexible funding that contributes to a charity's overall service delivery. Charities may apply for a specific project instead if they prefer, but new initiatives are funded only for previous grant holders. Eligible categories:
- Evidence-based physical therapies such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and multidisciplinary rehabilitation for people living with neurodegenerative and/or neuromuscular physical conditions, people with physical disabilities, or people recovering from life-changing injuries, with priority for services that are free or highly subsidised
- Specialist single-condition charities, typically national, providing condition information through nurse-led helplines and digital and print materials, with priority for Patient Information Forum (PIF) members or PIF Tick holders and Helplines Partnership members or Helplines Standard holders
- Charities whose main focus is direct healthcare for people experiencing homelessness, street sex workers or vulnerable migrants, where qualified clinicians provide regular GP, nurse or sexual health clinics, street-based medical outreach, or mobile healthcare clinics
- Emergency-response air ambulance charities in South West England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
Priority may go to charities that support people with life-limiting or degenerative conditions, use qualified specialist professionals, provide services free or at highly subsidised rates, and rely mainly on charitable trusts and foundations.
Typical grants are £10,000-£15,000 a year; first-time applicants might be awarded £10,000-£15,000, and £25,000 grants are exceptional.
Grants of two or three years are occasionally made but rarely go to first-time applicants.
