Who can apply

  • UK-based registered charities registered with the charity regulator for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland for at least three years; Community Interest Companies incorporated in the UK for more than three years, with at least three unrelated directors (a company secretary does not count unless also a director), no director registered as having significant control, and a named asset lock beneficiary in the Articles; and local authorities, which as lead applicant must show detailed plans to work with specialist organisations
  • Every project must be a partnership agreed in principle before applying, between armed forces organisations and specialist non-armed forces organisations; an organisation without substantial recent armed forces experience must deliver with partners that have it
  • Strand 1 projects must meet Outcome 1 (better access to support by meeting unmet need); Strand 2 projects must meet Outcome 1 and Outcome 2 (learning about the group's barriers increased, shared and applied)
  • Organisations may apply more than once for clearly separate projects

What it funds

Tailored mental health and wellbeing interventions for a specific underrepresented group or cohort in the armed forces community that respond to identified barriers, needs and experiences; the Trust is particularly keen on cohorts within:

  • Female personnel
  • Neurodivergent personnel
  • LGBTQ+ personnel
  • Ethnic minority and non-UK personnel
  • Service children with SEND and their parents
  • Serving and ex-serving personnel (or their partners) with caring responsibilities
  • Bereaved service families
  • Early service leavers and those experiencing unexpected or abrupt transition

eligible costs include staff time; volunteer costs and expenses; reasonable travel, including for beneficiaries; session costs, materials and equipment; accessibility costs; reasonable overheads, management and administration; partner costs for collaboration and knowledge-sharing; and evaluation and learning

non-clinical therapeutic interventions (such as life or wellness counselling, peer support or mindfulness) can be funded if proven by credible published evidence, as part of a wider package rather than wholly one-to-one therapy

What it will not fund

  • Projects that broadly support the armed forces community, or general mental health and wellbeing support
  • A single generic project for several groups
  • Standalone research, consultation or broad engagement with no clear intervention or beneficiary outcome (Strand 1)
  • New, untested ideas under Strand 2
  • Budgets made up of big capital costs, such as buying a vehicle (mileage is fundable)
  • Political campaigning or lobbying
  • Overlapping or duplicate applications from the same organisation
  • Late applications
