Heathrow Community Trust

HAPi (Heathrow Active People Initiative) grants

Grants of up to £2,500 for UK non-profit groups where an employee of Heathrow Airport Limited volunteers regularly. The employee applies on the group's behalf, with its authorisation, and the money is paid to the group. Projects must promote health and wellbeing, connect Heathrow colleagues with their community, or improve quality of life locally. The Trust focuses on the nine boroughs around Heathrow, but HAPi also accepts UK projects in other areas where Heathrow employees live.

Who can apply

  • Employees of Heathrow Airport Limited who regularly volunteer with a UK-based non-profit organisation, such as a school, community group, club, residents' association, charity, not-for-profit company or even a group of like-minded neighbours
  • The employee applies on the organisation's behalf and must name a contact in the organisation who has authorised the application; the grant is paid to the organisation
  • Groups should have a constitution and a bank account in the organisation's name; newer or less formal groups may partner with another organisation that can hold the funds
  • The project must be in the UK: the Trust focuses on the nine boroughs around Heathrow (Ealing, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Richmond, Runnymede, Slough, South Buckinghamshire, Spelthorne, Windsor & Maidenhead), but for HAPi it will consider other areas where Heathrow employees live
  • An organisation can hold only one active Heathrow Community Trust grant at a time, and only one grant per programme is awarded to any organisation

What it funds

Projects that meet one HAPi theme:

  • H1 Promoting health and wellbeing, for example new equipment or facilities, or new services the volunteer will be part of
  • H2 Providing an opportunity to connect more Heathrow employees with their community
  • H3 Supporting the local community to improve quality of life

projects can cost no more than £10,000 in total, must start within 3 months of the grant agreement date and must complete within one calendar year.

What it will not fund

  • Organisations operating outside the UK or benefitting non-UK beneficiaries
  • Projects costing more than £10,000
  • Applications from anyone other than Heathrow Airport Limited employees who regularly volunteer with the organisation
  • Applications submitted before the round opens or after the deadline
  • Projects starting before all grant paperwork has been finalised
  • Organisations that already hold an active grant from Heathrow Community Trust
  • The same project again within two years, even under a different grant programme, or the same project twice in succession

How to apply

  1. Contact the grants team for an informal discussion about the project (recommended)
  2. Read the HAPi guidance and criteria, the Trust's Grant-Making Policy and its Tips for Writing Your Funding Bid
  3. Gather the organisation's details: annual income and expenditure, numbers of staff and volunteers, how it manages safeguarding and risk, and a contact who authorises the application
  4. Complete the online HAPi application form while the round is open (round 2 of 2026 closes 29 October 2026); the form can be saved and resumed using a link valid for 30 days
  5. After the closing date you receive an email with your URN confirming the application is in the round
  6. A panel of Heathrow colleagues, with representatives of Heathrow Airport, the Trust and Groundwork South, assesses applications against the published criteria
  7. If successful, the organisation receives 90% of the grant up front and the remaining 10% after a short online end-of-project report with evidence of spending

the panel sees only what is on the form; if supporting images are crucial, email them to hct@groundwork.org.uk. Late entries are not accepted.

Have ready

  • Detailed breakdown of costs (numbers of items and unit costs)
  • The organisation's annual income/expenditure and numbers of full- and part-time staff and volunteers
  • Details of how the organisation manages safeguarding and risk
  • Contact details of someone in the organisation who has authorised the application

at the end of the project, evidence of spending such as receipts is needed for the final 10%.
