The SMB Trust

SMB Trust grants

The SMB Trust, founded in 1962 by Sybil May Betts, gives grants of £1,000 to £3,000 (up to £5,000 with justification) to UK registered charities. A charity must meet at least one of six criteria: supporting the Christian faith, social care in the UK or abroad, famine or emergency aid, environment and wildlife, education or medical research, or poverty relief. Applications are made by a single online form, considered quarterly. Charities must spend no more than 20% of their outgoings on fundraising.

Who can apply

  • UK registered charities only (registered in England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland); there are no exceptions for other organisations or individuals
  • The charity must show which of the Trust's six criteria it meets and how
  • It should spend no more than 20% of its overall outgoings on fundraising (trustees may make exceptions)
  • The person applying must be authorised by the charity, and successful charities must acknowledge receipt of the grant by email or be barred from future applications
  • Charities given a grant cannot apply again for 12 months; unsuccessful applicants may reapply for later meetings

What it funds

Activities of UK registered charities that satisfy at least one of these criteria:

  • Support the Christian faith
  • Provide social care in the UK and abroad
  • Provide famine/emergency aid
  • Protect the environment and wildlife
  • Support education or medical research
  • Alleviation of poverty

meeting more than one criterion does not improve the chance of success. Grants may be spent in the UK or overseas.

What it will not fund

  • Individuals
  • Organisations that are not UK registered charities (no exceptions)
  • Grants greater than the need the charity can demonstrate (the application is rejected)
  • Charities awarded an SMB Trust grant in the last 12 months
  • Applications by post, email, telephone or any route other than the online form (automatically rejected)

charities spending more than 20% of their overall outgoings on raising funds are normally ineligible, though trustees may make exceptions.

How to apply

  1. Read the Grant Guidelines in full
  2. Start the online application form; progress saves automatically, and unsubmitted applications are deleted after 14 days
  3. Give the charity's registration details and correspondence address, the percentage of costs spent on fundraising, the applicant's name and position, and whether the charity is known to a trustee
  4. Choose the criteria that apply, explain how your objectives meet them, and describe the project in detail
  5. Give the amount requested (£1,000-£3,000; up to £5,000 with reasons), the continent where it will be spent, your income band and the charity's bank details
  6. Submit by the cut-off for the next meeting: 20 January, 20 April, 20 July or 20 October (for meetings in February, May, August and November)
  7. Successful applicants are contacted by the 14th of the month after the meeting; if you have not heard by then, the application was unsuccessful

later applications are considered at the following quarterly meeting. Supporting files must be under 10MB each and uploaded through the form, never emailed. The trustees do not give reasons for decisions.
