Diocese of Manchester
Church Building Grants
Grants from the Church of England Diocese of Manchester to parishes towards essential repairs to their consecrated church buildings and licensed places of worship. Grants cover up to 25% of project costs, to a maximum of £15,000, for projects costing at least £10,000; the rest must come from parish funds or other funders. Only Church of England parishes (PCCs) in the diocese, which covers Greater Manchester and Rossendale, can apply. There is £140,000 in the fund, and applications are considered at Grants Panel meetings.

Who can apply
- Church of England parishes (Parochial Church Councils) in the Diocese of Manchester, which covers Greater Manchester and Rossendale; the applicant confirms they are authorised to apply on behalf of the PCC
- The parish must have paid the previous year's Parish Share in full and have its latest accounts available
- The work must have the Archdeacon's support, a faculty must be applied for where required, and the project must have architect supervision where required
- The church building must not have had a Church Building Grant in the previous two calendar years
- The grant can be no more than 25% of project costs, so the parish must find at least 75% from its own funds or other funders
- Other charities and community groups are not eligible
What it funds
- Repairs to Church of England consecrated church buildings and licensed places of worship, including the building's below-ground drainage, foundations and immediate curtilage
- The diocese's grants page describes them as for urgent repair work, and they can be used as match funding for heritage grants or other major repair work
- Where a parish has more than one church, an application can be made for each church building
- The grant is at most 25% of the total project cost, up to £15,000, and is paid on completion of the work against invoices
What it will not fund
- Projects with a total cost under £10,000
- Routine maintenance, cleaning, servicing and inspection
- Re-ordering and decoration
- Other buildings not attached to the church building
- Churchyards (unless the work mitigates a risk to the church building)
- Boundary walls
- Organ restoration (the diocese points to an alternative funder)
- Stained glass (the diocese points to an alternative funder)
- Any work covered by insurance
- Any work invoiced before the grant application is approved
- Church buildings that received a Church Building Grant in the previous two calendar years
How to apply
- Consult the appropriate Archdeacon or diocesan officer for legal and technical advice, and read the DAC and Faculty guidance (DAC Secretary: dac@manchester.anglican.org, 0161 828 1420)
- Get two competitive quotes (or one quote approved by your surveyor or architect) and apply for a faculty if one is needed
- Complete the online Church Buildings Grants application form (Microsoft Form): parish and applicant details, whether the building is listed, the proposed works, project cost excluding VAT, VAT, professional fees, amount requested, match funding sources and amounts, and faculty status; upload the quotes
- Submit at least two weeks before a Grants Panel meeting: the next is Monday 19 October 2026, for applications received by 5 October 2026
- If approved, carry out the work and send copies of invoices to draw down the grant, normally within 12 months, with six-monthly updates
If you cannot use the online form, contact grants@manchester.anglican.org.
No Grants Panel dates after 19 October 2026 have been published yet.
