Who can apply

  • Small established organisations with a proven record of impact, and individuals, located in the South West of England — the eligible counties are Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset, and the Trust states it is not accepting applications from North East Somerset, Bath or Bristol
  • An organisation or individual that has been funded cannot reapply within two years, and the Trust notes this may lengthen to three or four

What it funds

  • Projects which help to improve the quality of local life and welfare
  • Art projects that enhance local quality of life
  • Core running costs or project costs for eligible small organisations
  • For individuals, further education where there is clear compassionate need and the aim is to improve employment prospects

What it will not fund

  • Postgraduate study or second and subsequent degrees
  • Overseas students, and international travel or expeditions
  • Promotion of religion
  • Animal welfare
  • Research, which is rarely funded
  • Large national organisations
  • Retrospective funding — the Trust states it does not give retrospective grants, so an application must fit the meeting timings

How to apply

  • By post only — the Trust does not accept emailed applications
  • Organisations apply by letter; there is no application form for organisations
  • The board meets three times a year, usually on the last Saturday of February, June and October, and applications must arrive at least one clear month before, preferably six weeks
  • The next meeting is October 2026, with everything due to arrive in the post on or before 24 September 2026; anything applied for after 10 September may not leave time for follow-up questions and would be carried to the March 2027 meeting
  • Individuals must request an application form by email first

Have ready

  • A letter of application giving full contact details, charity number and website
  • A summary of the organisation and who it benefits
  • One and preferably two examples of previous work over the last two years and why they are a source of pride
  • Reports from that work
  • Feedback from users and letters of support
  • The most recent accounts, unaudited being acceptable
  • The amount sought and what for

The Trust asks for numbered pages, paper clips rather than staples, and consistent single- or double-sided printing.
