John Ellerman Foundation

Funder Collaborations Fund

A responsive grant programme from John Ellerman Foundation for other grantmakers only: registered charitable foundations and non-profit funders seeking a contribution to collaborative work. Proposals must be joint research, pooled funding, or coordinated influencing of policy or practice, and must link to the Foundation's 2025-2030 strategy and its grantmaking or investing. There is no minimum or maximum grant and no turnover limit; the whole fund is about £236,720 for 2026/27, so requests should be proportionate.

Who can apply

  • Grantmaking organisations only: registered charitable foundations and non-profit funders
  • Unlike the Foundation's Main Grants programme there is no turnover restriction, so large funders can apply
  • Charities that deliver services rather than make grants are not eligible here (they should look at Main Grants)

What it funds

Funder collaborations of one or more of the following types:

  • Joint research – collaborative evidence gathering and field analysis that informs the Foundation's own work and has wider benefits to other groups and colleagues
  • Pooled funding – multiple funders contributing to a single pot with delegated decision-making
  • Influencing policy or practice – coordinated advocacy and sector leadership that helps to shift the dial on important issues, including those that can lead to systemic change

the proposal must show clear alignment with the Foundation's strategy, a connection with its grantmaking and/or investing work, and why collaboration adds value that a single organisation could not deliver.

How to apply

  1. Send a short enquiry to the Senior Grants Manager, who will decide whether follow-up is needed
  2. Take part in follow-up and pre-application support from the Director or Senior Grants Manager as needed
  3. Apply through the Foundation's grantmaking applications portal: organisation overview questions plus a proposal of no more than two sides of A4 (PDF or Word, font size 10 minimum)

where an applicant makes multiple applications or already has suitable material, the Foundation may write the two-page proposal up on its behalf.

Have ready

Proposal of no more than two sides of A4 covering:

  • The applying organisation and the collaboration, and why working together adds value
  • Links to the Foundation's 2025-2030 strategy
  • Intended outcomes and impact
  • The amount requested, total collaboration budget and timeline with key outputs and dates
