Who can apply

  • Organisations working for a 'local good cause' that benefits residents of the Borough of Broxbourne; applications are rejected otherwise
  • The policy lists local not-for-profit community groups and voluntary organisations, local charities, regional and national charities with a focus within the borough, and not-for-profit sports clubs and Community Amateur Sports Clubs
  • They must be properly constituted, with membership or services open to all residents (or all of a specific group, such as disabled people or over-sixties). 'Local' means located and operating in the borough, though bodies outside it whose services significantly benefit residents may exceptionally be supported
  • Awards are for one financial year; organisations must reapply each year

What it funds

  • Cash grant - a cash grant, funded from the Broxbourne Lottery
  • Facility subsidy - a grant towards the use of Council owned facilities
  • Rent relief - a grant towards the rent of a Council owned property
  • Business rates relief - a grant towards the cost of business rates

under the 2019 policy, facility subsidy is up to 100% for one-off events and up to 20% for regular events; discretionary rate relief is up to 20% on top of mandatory relief for charities and up to 100% for voluntary organisations, scaled by bar turnover; rent relief is up to 50% of the annual rent.

What it will not fund

  • Individuals
  • Commercial organisations
  • Statutory bodies including schools
  • Bodies discharging the statutory duties of statutory bodies
  • Charities or not-for-profit organisations whose work does not directly benefit Borough residents
  • The cost of celebratory events
  • The cost of hiring or renting facilities belonging to a third party

the council is unlikely to support organisations with substantial cash balances, that could reasonably get funds elsewhere or have not sought other funding, or that do not address the council's objectives. Retrospective applications only in exceptional circumstances.

  1. Apply using the council's online Community Grant form between 12 October and 1 December 2026
  2. Applications are considered by the Grants Panel on 16 February 2027
