RMA – The Royal Marines Charity Welfare Grants

Welfare and benevolence grants from RMA – The Royal Marines Charity for serving and former Royal Marines and their dependant families who are in financial or other crisis. Grants cover essentials such as food, clothing, white goods, mobility aids, relocation, funeral costs, respite breaks, mental health therapy and priority debts, and are often given alongside other service charities. Requests go through the charity's Welfare and Grants office, usually with a SSAFA caseworker assessment.

Who can apply

  • Individuals: serving and former Royal Marines and their dependant families
  • Eligible beneficiaries are considered equally, irrespective of length or type of service, or service in any operational theatre or conflict, and each application is treated on its merits
  • Someone else (a spouse, relative or friend) can make the request on the person's behalf, saying whether that person knows they are making contact

What it funds

  • Financial help towards relocation costs
  • Professional fees and charges towards funeral costs
  • Essential food, groceries and clothing
  • Mobility/disability aids and adaptations
  • White goods and brown goods
  • Respite and family breaks
  • Mental health therapy
  • Primary debt, e.g. council tax arrears, utility bills

the funder says this is not an exhaustive list; support can be financial or non-financial, and is often given with other service charities.

What it will not fund

  • Care home top-up fees
  • Legal costs (other than bankruptcy charges and access/residency to child/ren cases)

the funder says grants are 'not normally made' for these.

How to apply

  1. Tell the Welfare and Grants team what the problem is, using the online welfare request form (https://rma-trmc.org/request-help/), by phone on 0800 468 1664, or by email
  2. The charity refers the case to SSAFA, the forces charity
  3. Where necessary a SSAFA caseworker visits to assess your needs and completes an 'Assessment Form A'
  4. Once the charity receives the Assessment Form A, it takes the recommended actions
  5. After the SSAFA case closes the charity may offer further services, such as an RMA Veteran Support Officer

the charity says that without the SSAFA Assessment Form A it (and other charities SSAFA reports to) cannot issue a grant. Office hours are 08:30 to 16:00, Monday to Friday.
