Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council

Disabled Facilities Grant (Solihull)

The statutory Disabled Facilities Grant from Solihull Council: up to £30,000 towards major changes to the home of a disabled adult or child so they can live more safely and independently, such as widening doorways, ramps, stairlifts or an accessible shower. Owners and tenants can apply after an Occupational Therapy assessment. A financial assessment decides any contribution, except for children and young people under 19 and people on qualifying means-tested benefits; the council's Housing Assistance Policy offers further discretionary help.

Who can apply

  • Solihull residents where the applicant or someone they live with has a physical condition or injury, sight, hearing or communication difficulties, a learning disability, a mental health condition, or a long-term condition affecting daily life
  • The applicant or the person they are applying for must own the property or be a tenant, and intend to live in it during the grant period
  • Eligibility is decided by an Occupational Therapy assessment
  • A financial assessment of income and savings may decide whether a contribution is needed; there is no contribution for work for a child or young person under 19, or for people receiving a qualifying means-tested benefit such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit
  • Solihull Community Housing tenants apply through SCH instead

What it funds

Major changes to the home to allow disabled adults and children to live more safely and independently, such as:

  • Widening doorways
  • Installing ramps
  • Installing a stairlift
  • Replacing a bath with an accessible shower or specialist bath

smaller changes (minor adaptations) do not need a DFG; ask Solihull Independent Living Service (SILS) about them.

What it will not fund

  • Solihull Community Housing (SCH) tenants, who use SCH's own aids and adaptations service
  • Minor adaptations, which are requested through SILS instead

How to apply

  1. Contact the Occupational Therapy Team (ccadults@solihull.gov.uk, 0121 704 8007) and complete an Occupational Therapy assessment
  2. If eligible, the Occupational Therapy Team recommends suitable home adaptations
  3. Complete a financial assessment if needed, to decide whether a DFG can be paid and any contribution
  4. The council may prepare drawings and arrange any planning permission or building regulations approval
  5. Put the paperwork in place, with support from Solihull Independent Living Service (SILS), before the grant is approved
  6. SILS arranges a site visit with the builder, who gives a start date

if the grant is more than £5,000, a local land charge is placed on the property for 10 years and up to £10,000 is repayable if you sell within that time.
