Road Safety Trust

Police Road Safety Grants Programme

Grants of £10,000 to £30,000 over up to 18 months for UK police forces to trial, test, evaluate and share innovative roads policing interventions that reduce deaths and injuries on the roads. This is the second year of a two-year pilot, with an autumn 2026 call: a short expression of interest first, then a full application if shortlisted. Bids must be led by an eligible police organisation, though partnership with universities, charities and others is encouraged, and match funding (cash or in-kind) is required.

Who can apply

  • All UK police forces and their Police and Crime Commissioners (or the equivalent in Scotland and Northern Ireland), and national policing organisations such as the College of Policing
  • Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with outside partners including universities, research organisations, road safety partnerships, charities and commercial companies, but bids must be led and submitted by an eligible police organisation
  • The EOI must be authorised by the Head of Roads Policing or a Superintendent equivalent, and the project lead and finance lead must be from the police organisation
  • All projects must include partnership working and have other sources of funding, cash or in-kind, and all staff costs need an element of match funding

What it funds

Innovative and promising roads policing projects that link to local priorities and show a proposed or proven link to reducing casualties. Eligible projects include:

  • Evaluation of successful police interventions
  • Further development and dissemination of findings from evaluated police interventions
  • Pilots and trials

Continuation, delivery or roll out of existing projects (for example in a different force area) is eligible but must have an innovative aspect such as additional aspects or an evaluation.

Eligible costs include staffing, consumables, travel, some equipment costs, and dedicated analyst or project management support specifically for the project.

What it will not fund

  • Requests for 100% of project costs (all projects need other cash or in-kind funding)
  • Enforcement equipment, unless testing new equipment is part of the project and can later be shared as a proof of concept
  • Funding for particular roles if that is all the bid is looking to do
  • Overtime, unless specifically for the project and not used for business-as-usual activity
  • Single use capital costs
  • Ongoing maintenance or replacement of capital costs
  • Ongoing licence fees
  • Projects longer than 18 months

How to apply

  1. Read the Police Grants Guidance (November 2026)
  2. Send a 1-2 page Expression of Interest to info@roadsafetytrust.org.uk with the subject 'RST Police Grants Programme Submission' between 2 November and 7 December 2026, covering the project, contacts and authorisation, a high-level budget and co-funding, the challenge, innovation, measurable difference, risks, and any DPIA
  3. Shortlisting results are given in mid to late January 2027
  4. If shortlisted, submit the full application by 15 February 2027: basic information through an online portal, plus the proposal as a Word, PDF or PowerPoint document
  5. Decisions are made in mid to late March 2027

The Trust can signpost applicants to academic support for developing the proposal or evaluating it; say so in the EOI. Such costs come out of the grant request.

Have ready

  • Expression of Interest (1-2 pages)
  • Detailed budget with breakdown and justification, and evidence of co-funding (at full application)
  • Full proposal covering aims, objectives and outcomes, delivery plan and timeline (at full application)

The Trust provides editable Aims & Objectives guidance and a template. Projects needing data sharing should indicate progress on a DPIA.
