South Lanarkshire Council

Scottish Welfare Fund (South Lanarkshire): Crisis and Community Care Grants

South Lanarkshire Council runs the Scottish Welfare Fund locally, giving one-off grants that do not have to be paid back to people on a low income. Crisis Grants help in an emergency, with cash or vouchers for essentials such as food, fuel or clothing; Community Care Grants help people set up or keep a safe home, usually by providing items such as a cooker, fridge or bed, or removal costs.

Who can apply

  • People aged 16 or over who live in, or plan to live in, South Lanarkshire and are on a low income
  • Most applicants receive Universal Credit or Pension Credit, but this is not a requirement
  • Each application is assessed on personal circumstances

What it funds

  • Crisis Grants for emergencies, such as a fire or flood in your home, money being lost or stolen, travel costs to visit a sick child in hospital, or leaving an unsafe situation such as domestic abuse
  • Community Care Grants to set up or keep a safe and secure home, for example when leaving care or prison, moving from homeless accommodation, needing support to live independently, caring for someone recently released from prison, or leaving domestic abuse

Crisis Grants may be a cash payment or vouchers for essential food, fuel or clothing. Community Care Grants usually provide items rather than cash, such as removal costs, household items like a cooker, washing machine or fridge, and essential furniture.

What it will not fund

  • People waiting on a Department for Work and Pensions benefit decision (may not qualify)
  • People who have had three crisis grants in the last 12 months, unless circumstances are exceptional
  • The same item applied for in the last 28 days where nothing has changed

How to apply

  1. Apply using the council's online Crisis Grant or Community Care Grant application form
  2. Upload any evidence you are asked for on the form
  3. The council contacts you by phone, text or email with a decision
  4. If you disagree, ask for a review within 20 working days of the decision letter, then if needed go to the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman within one month
